Further 1,000 troops deployed in bid to restore law and order

Police cannot cope, warns Thammarak

The army has despatched another 1,000 troops to reinforce their 150 comrades deployed earlier to quell violence in three southern border provinces.

The new batch consists of 500 troops from the Burapa Task Force based in Prachin Buri and another 500 from the Suranaree Task Force in Surin.

They are now in Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani provinces to help the first batch of 150 soldiers sent there following a fresh outbreak of violence in the deep South that began with a rebel raid on an army camp in Narathiwat on Jan 4

Defence Minister Thammarak Isarangkura na Ayudhaya said yesterday that southern insurgents were making attacks in urban areas, so authorities must take full control of those areas first.

That goal must be achieved before a mobile cabinet meeting takes place in Pattani around mid-March, Gen Thammarak said.

More troops had to be deployed in the three provinces because the situation there was now beyond police control.

However, he also said the situation was improving with more suspects being arrested and the locals more willing to cooperate with state officials.

Southern insurgents were not so strong but they could make a successful raid on the army camp on Jan 4 because of lax security at the camp, the defence minister said.

Lt-Col Chalermpong Thongpradit, the camp commander who was transferred after the raid, would be tried in a military court, he added.

Yesterday police arrested two suspects in Narathiwat's Tak Bai district. A long knife and a motorcycle were seized from them as evidence.

Suwatchai Paksamran, 18, and Jirapong Hongnoi, 17, both of Jehhay village, were arrested while riding a motorcycle in their village around 1am.

Both allegedly told police they were planning to attack a local Muslim teenager. They were charged with possessing a weapon and plotting a murder.

The two suspects were heavily questioned yesterday as police were still looking for suspects in recent fatal attacks on Buddhist monks in the three southern border provinces.

what is with these MUSLIMS? is violence just part of their religion? killing a monk, burning down schools, no law and order...now in Saudia Arabia here 10s of thousands gather for an annual effect to throw rocks and yell USA is SATAN while 244 people get trampled to death. is this gathering for good luck or something? maybe a muslim can explain on this forum.
