I have a black macbook - that's not as down and out as it sounds because a couple of years ago it got a new motherboard and battery. I've loaded Lion on it. All has been well until a couple of days ago when the moment I open iTunes I get the spinning top. I've tried returning after a 'force quit', after a restart, even after a sync with my mobile but I can't get rid of the spinning top and therefore I can't access iTunes. Can someone tell me what else I should try/do?

Reinstaling itunes des not do the trick for sure, its not windows :)

One question: how old is your iTunes database ?

If you had skipped serval osx versions (or subversions) it can happen that the compression process not smoothly wors, results in this behaviur.

Easy way to find this out is to simply stop iTUnes, then go to tour homefolder -> Music

And rename the folder iTUnes to something else

Then start iTunes again, a error will pop up that the database is not beeing found and it offers you to create a new one or search for it.

Click "create", quit ituenss afterwards

And start it again.

Itunes should then show up but all the content is gone.

If it spinning again, its a software or hardwareissue,

If the spining is gone, its the database.

After the test is passed, simply stop itunes again.

Go to your homefolder - music

Delete the new iTunes folder and rename the old one back to iTunes.

Then all your data will be back where it was before.

Thanks a lot for your advice nullx8

I did what you said. Renamed the itunes folder; then opened iTunes expecting the error box you anticipated - in fact the box never came but a fresh, virgin itunes just opened, clear of data. No spinning and all working normally - I checked by going to the itunes store etc.

Then I deleted the new iTunes, renamed the old one back to iTunes; opened iTunes, which came back with the data listed in the left column - but again not responding.

So from what you say this would be a data problem? Some of the music has been there for years; some just months; but the podcasts are downloaded and deleted continually, some of them are as new as the day before the problem started. Is my only option now to maybe delete the bad iTunes, use a new iTunes without data and then somehow get the music etc back from my iPad into which most of it had been synced?

The only thing I had done recently, before the current problem, is when I was having a problem connecting on bluetooth with my jambox speaker I was advised on thai visa (and apple forum)to go to delete something (can't remember what but I guess I can go back on the forum and look it up). Anyway after doing that the bluetooth problem was solved. I don't think this had anything to do with my current problem which I don't believe cropped up immedediately I did that bluetooth correction, but only some days later.

Well I didn't resolve the iTunes freezing problem and will be taking it across for repair. But I have just bought a new Macbook Pro. I haven't yet had the data transferred but will soon. My question is, if I transfer data before getting the itunes freezing problem resolved, will the data transfer, which will obviously include music etc in iTunes, will a defective music file that may be there and causing the problem also transfer across to my new laptop and cause the same freezing problem in my new Macbook's iTunes?
