100,000 net access points by end of month

The Nation on Sunday

BANGKOK: -- The Information and Communica-tions Technology Ministry will expand its free Wi-Fi project to 100,000 access points countrywide by the end of this month, ICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap said yesterday.

He said in the government's weekly TV programme "Yingluck Government Meets the People" that 10,000 access points had been made available across the nation already.

Up to 250,000 access points will be available by the first or second quarter of next year. The speed at each point was around 2 megabits per second, Anudith added.

Before the government's policy to promote equal Internet broadband access among Thais, only 12 per cent of Thai people had access to the Internet. After the policy was launched, 30 per cent or 20 million people could access the Internet as private and state enterprise sectors have expanded the Internet network and the government targeted to increase the figure to 80 per cent in 2015, according to him.

He added that the project was helping prepare infrastructure in the country in preparation for the Asean Economic Community. Anudith also invited Thai people to try high-speed Internet. He urged them to search for "ICT Free Hotspot" and sign in with their names and ID card numbers to obtain passwords for Internet use.

Sounds very good, but funny thing, the first thing that popped into my mind was, ...... wonder if this system will be better maintained than the CCTV cameras spotted all over , the just happen to not have any inards or are broken when a crime is committed .

I recall some catch to this? Like you have to inpur an id card number to use the wifi so anyone without an id card can't access, I wonder if that will still be the case.

Given that, I wonder how you register for it if you don't have internet access?

More to the point, will it be linked to the national database, or will any random number (11? 12? digits) satisfy the input.

These government people should get together some time to get their lies straight.

Hmmmm.............I still have a photocopy of my brother-in-law's (thieving low-life pond-scum) ID card. I wonder if logging into govt WiFi and posting a few Midnight Skulker messages might earn him a visit from the BIB. Not that I would do such a thing.............

If everyone has their own HTC with internet access, why would the government need to provide free internet access?

The internet cafes will make some money then, with lots of people needing to go in to buy 15-60 minutes of time so that they can register every 6 months.

Maybe you have to show an id to get a log on. That is not so uncommon. In India, you must show id to buy a sim card.

My question is: why do I still need to pay at Starbucks?

Everybody does NOT have their own internet access, that's why....

So I'll cross that off the list of "choices".

I If they don't have internet access I would imagine that they would go to a internet cafe. I understand they have these in Thailand. It might be difficult to access the internet in Nakon Nowhere but at least they are trying to get some sort of internet access to the Thai folk,

There is no such thing as a free lunch! So don't trust the government, not to mention the MICT.

(MICT = Ministry of Internet Censorship of Thailand)

If you need an ID - Card number to access a free WiFi hotspot, the question is: WHY?

And the answer is: So the government can eavesdrop on your Internet communication, chat, e-mail etc. Remember, Lese Majesty cases are up 200%!

Have any of you ever used WiFi at the airport or anywhere in Thailand server by TrueMove/3B? You simply connect to the network and when you try to use the internet a web page is displayed asking you to log in or signup.

My 2 cents...

1) I wonder how True, 3B and other providers feel about having their business destroyed by the government?

2) How effective is a 2MB connection when you 70 million Thai's trying to use it simultaneously?

3) How many connections can one WiFi router support, maybe 25, and that is if they use a quality Cisco router not the regular garbage found in IT shops in Thailand.

4) How do they plan to maintain 100k or more WiFi routers when they can't even pick up the garbage all over the country? Will there be a built in routine to reboot the router every 4 hours when it hangs. Will firmware updates be rolled out every year? How will they protected all these devices from the heat, rain and humidity, especially considering Thai's apparent lack of understanding of fluid dynamics. Then there is the whole issue of power, will they wire 100k WiFi routers the same way they install lights in Thailand? We visited a temple over the holiday and there were florescent lights along the wall about every 2 meters, these were hanging vertically from the top of the wall down to the sidewalk. The wires on everyone were just twisted together and had a bit of electrical tape covering them. Amazing no one has been electrocuted there.

5) I am sure I will not be happy when my TOT internet service degrades when all these devices are installed and every Thai is trying to use them.
