Im noticing a lot of larger white tipped mosquitoes in my Moo, these are the bastards that carry malaria and dengue, they are also hanging around in the day, does anyone know if I can contact the Or Bor Tor and get them to come around and do a big spray? I dont mind paying but I would like it done sooner rather than later.

Also I want to get one of those bug zapper things.....but I want like one of those Australian style heavy duty ones that I can hear cracking from a kilometer away (that always brings a smile to my face even if I am half asleep), but Im stuck for brand names or where to buy them (yes I know about ebay, but I would prefer to go and inspect one in Phuket if possible)

The big bug zappers are available in Thailand at a big price. They can be ordered through Alababa in China at reasonable but still expensive prices.

I tried to get the Or Bor tor to come by my place again in Chiang Rai and spray but they would not do it.

If you can find small bottles of propane you can buy the cheap hand held ones that are activated by propane and a spark.

These things work great and with the big ones, you only need to spraya bout every 2 weeks.

I don't remember the source, but I do remember an article saying the electronic bug zappers are great for killing moths etc (that's the loud crack you hear), but mossies just ignore them.

I was hoping to avoid buying online as a lot of the time it doesnt turn out like you want it....you know any brand names?

I like the idea of the propane...does it act like a kind of flame thrower? Where do you buy these from?... Ive got a lot of ground to cover though...at least 7 houses in the moo and a few burmese shacks plus a bit of a rubber plantation down the end, Im sure the Thais and Burmese wouldnt mind me flame throwing around the neighbourhood but there is a couple of do-gooder falangs that might get upset

You will have to bring one back from Australia thats what i did the locally sold ones are just about useless, had no problem bringing it through customs

Cracks all the time small cracks and flashes mosquitoes large cracks usually termites/ white ants

They do not smell the insect bodies are vaporized and only the wings are left except for the occasional moth that gets in

Use a blower to clean it every 2 or 3 days

Bring a spare globe with you they are not available here

Then you should look for the propane co2 / octanol mosquito traps. Something like this http://www.amazon.com/Mosquito-Magnet-MM4000-Defender-Trap/dp/B000094YKM or http://www.megacatch.com/

Propane is burned to create co2, which is what the mosquitoes are looking for. Octane is a similar 'smell' what human body emit and mossies use that for fine tuning their targeting.

Those traps are effective for about 50% of mosquito types. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/06/050607013042.htm

I think they are the ones that put out a thick white smoke. Some Thai guys come around a few times a year and smoke the neighborhood. I think they're from the Or Bor Tor in Rawai, but I'm not positive.

I bought a fairly large bug zapper here at Big C years ago. It seemed to kill everything but the mosquitos, then ants would come and eat the dead moths etc.

This is one of the types of the aedes mosquito we have around here that carries dengue, chikungunya, and other diseases. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aedes_albopictus

There is quite a lot of controversy how effective the UV light is to attract mosquitoes. If you say yours is working great, I have no doubt about your word. Could you tell a bit more how well does it work. On average how many mosquitoes does it catch per night. Where the trap is located (inside - outside of the house) etc.

http://home.howstuff...bug-zapper1.htm

In 1996, University of Delaware researchers Timothy Frick and Douglas Tallamy published a study in the journal Entomological News. They had collected and identified the kills from six bug zappers at various sites throughout suburban Newark, Del., during the summer of 1994. Of the nearly 14,000 insects that were electrocuted and counted, only 31 (0.22 percent) were mosquitoes and biting gnats. The largest number (6,670, or 48 percent) were midges and harmless,

http://www.livingwit...om/mos_blt.html

Summary: Black light traps ("bug zapper"-type) attract and kill insects indiscriminately so they are a poor choice for mosquito and biting fly control.

http://www.livingwit...quito_trap.html

Summary: Mosquito and biting fly traps use a combination of carbon dioxide, body odors and UV iight to attract and capture these biting pests. Traps can be effective where mosquito populations are high but the traps are relatively expensive and require a fair amount of maintenance.

I and people i know have used them for years and they work well

The one i have has a 20 Watt UV light and a 1000volt killing grid

First time i used it here in Chalong killed about 50 mossies in first hour and then slowed down

They start attracting once its properly dark and usually kill most mossies in the first hour, about 10 in the first hour now as we run it every night, after rain there are more mossies around for the next few days so it kills more

We only get a few mossies now but when we shifted into the house there were lots

The problem is most people do nothing about them and they migrate from there houses to ours

Posted

The zapper we have has a positive and a negative grill, when the insects try to fly between the grills there is a flash of light and a popping noise, small insects like mossies are vaporized so there is no residue left to find so i do not see how anyone can accurately tell how many of any type of insects are killed, bigger insects leave a residue and if a house lizard/geppo gets in it is killed instantly but mumified and you have to carefully remove it without bending the grills

I hang ours on a length of thin wire about 4 foot from the ground which is good for killing insects but stops the lizards getting into it

I bought one of the large and small mossie killers from HomePro - both were useless.

They attracted a fair number of mossies, but far more ignored them.

So I threw them away when the 'tubes' died, and rely on Bagon 'coils' to deter them, the mossie spray killer when I've been bitten in the house (approx once a week) and the 'plug in' tablets when I've been bitten in the bedroom at night (approx once a week). FAR more effective than the mossie zappers.

Our neighbor bought one locally after watching ours work Therese is just about useless compared to the one i brought back from Australia

We still use insect spray as well but not very often not like when we first moved into the house when we sprayed every day

I am no expert, but I can assure you that the mosquitoes that carry dengue and those that carry malaria are NOT the same. Malarial mosquitoes travel only at night, while dengue mosquitoes travel only by day.</p>
