ENTs tend to have sub-specialty focus (the most common being allergy), can you indicate the type of ENT problem?

To make a long story short: On day for about three years ago, after a morning shower, i had, what i thought, water in my left ear and couldn't hear so well. The hearing never came back. A few weeks later i got an awful smell from my left nostril and related it with my bad hearing. I went to Samitijev Hospital in Bangkok and spended about 1.5 hour doing a hearing test, got x-rayed and some examination and also got some antibiotic. It did not help at all. All that cost me only 3000 baht.

The years past and now I’m losing my sight on the right eye slightly and it worries me so I have to do something now as I'm only 43 years old.

I went to Pattaya International Hospitals ENT the other day. After 5 min of examination he could not find anything wrong so he suggested a CAT-scan for 13000baht. Ok, but i had to think about it i said. The price dropped to 9000baht. Fine, but i still needed to think about it. His face dropped little and started to mumble about another hospital. First I did not understand him. I asked him why another hospital, and he said "the militarily hospital only charge 5000 baht. Maybe better for you" What an insult. I make well over 200 000b a month so i can afford it, but i had to do some of my own research before i decided to accept his suggestion. He charged me 1700 baht for a 5 minutes examination. He maxed that receipt out with 5-6 different costs. He charged me 400 for a nurse blink.png and also for "Extra expenses".

How can you trust a doctor with dollar signs in his eyes? Guys like his may cut you up just for the money. I know a guy who lost his foot because of a money hungry "doctor" who cut his whole foot open. Another doctor said that the problem was a ween in his ankle and was easy to fix, and also he did, cost 5000 baht. But the foot did not survive as it was to damages after the fist "doctor's" many attempts. That cost my friend around 200 000 baht plus loss of income during the time and of course his foot. And without his foot, he could not continue his business and have to move back to his country after 13 years in Thailand.

So I may have to head up to Bangkok again.

I am not sure how the doctor trying to provide a lower priced service is an insult if you had not clearly indicated the reason for delay was to check other options or obtain a second opinion (and even if you had he was providing options in case money might be the real reason). But more importantly why are you visiting an ENT if you currently have an eye problem? It may not have anything to do with your previous issues. Or did I read wrong? As for bill it will normally include additonal items and nursing charge will be one of them. Do not believe that hospital is known for being inexpensive and it seems you took cheaper to be insulting with the CAT issue so may indeed have been larger in attempt to make you happy?

It probably would be good to visit Bangkok are there is a better selection of both hospitals and specialists available but if you are having eyesight issues please see a doctor of ophthalmology as you do not want to take any chances on sight loss if it can be prevented.

As the left half of the brain controls the the right eye, I got worried that maybe the infection had spread to that side of the brain. I know it is a long-shot but it has to be investigated.

He did not offer any another service. He was patronizing and was not specific when suggested another hospital. It was more like "hum, maybe you should shop somewhere else then" clearly he had hope to sell me something more. When he didn't, he lost him self by mumbling, and he spoke fairly good English otherwise. I have seen this some many times with surly people, most females when they don't get what they want. I don't know, maybe he just had a bad day. I did really liked the guy before the mumbling started.

From what you describe you should indeed come to Bangkok and see a neurologist and an opthalmologist.

BTW at any private hospital in Thailand, the doctors set their own consultation fee but the various other charges tacked on are not under their control and does not go to them.
