More gardens with palm trees and benches and small eateries, like behind spicy restaurant, there are a few cheap clean delicious food shops and a few shady places to while away a couple if hours eating chatting reading just being. If anyone knows of any more similar to this I'd be forever grateful!

A place that really non profit for any people come to drink coffee/tea, eat some soup, fried rice,... simple food and drink for free, share some experience if they want, or just come to read a book, watch tv, listen to the music (not loud),... may be have some rooms (free)for people who have some problem and no place to sleep (just for a fews day max.), then put some small donate box in case some people what to give a few baht help to survive this place. I am not sure if it will be only a wish, but who know may be possible to begin with 2 baht for a cup of coffee .

Someone to pay for your dream

I used to go to a great vegetarian restaurant in downtown San Francisco. They had set meals with veggie dishes, whole wheat bread, home made yogurt and vegetable juice for only $1.00. It lasted for about 6 months until the hippies that ran it got arrested for the bank robberies that had funded it.

Brisbane Qld was a pretty ordinary city until the 'south bank' of it's river was converted to park land complete with artificial lagoon/beach after the '88 World Expo.

When I lived in Prague we had "Prague Beach" on the bank of the Vltava River, right in the city. It was a great place to spend a hot summer afternoon sipping Mojitos, watching the lovely Czech ladies (dressed in practically nothing) play volleyball, having a barbeque, and consuming herbs.

Good idea,+ bicycle paths too.

Forgot the biggest one of all. Parks with playgrounds in them. The only option kids have to play here is indoors at the malls. The playgrounds at Suan BuakHaard and Huay Tung Tao are a disgrace to say the least.

Kids don't seem to play anymore, unless an on-line computer is involved.

The question is why?.........was it before it's time?........not enough expats established?.........an alien concept to Thais?........

Maybe nobody on this forum knows. The real answer lies with the former operators. And, if you could find them, they'd most likely not tell you the truth anyway. They'd lose face having to admit that they either didn't do their homework ahead of time, or they mismanaged the project while it was up and running.

Good topic Blether. I would vote for no change at all except for clean air all year long.

I concur plus a bit more... rolls back 5-10 years! I may be accused of being selfish - one not wanting progress and advancement - but to me, rapid development brings about greediness, coldness and arrogance with little learned about accountability and responsibility in this country. The d_a_m_ned politics in recent years are really doing great harm to this country for the long run The damage has already been done and it's irreversible and I just hope it doesn't deteriorate too fast.

For me, CM offers most if not all the modern convenience I need and yet close to nature which is refreshing!

Goose's in Pattaya is excellent. The John Dory is actually quite good and also inexpensive, but you can get cod, haddock or halibut if you pay more.

CNX-DUB is 2811 miles and CNX-DOH is 3051 miles, so we are just about in-range for a 2-class-configured A321 (range 3200 nm), to fly non-stop between Chiang Mai and the Gulf, with onward-connections to Europe & the World !

Whichever airline does this first can lock-in all the farang-residents & tourist-traffic, using their loyalty/ff-card, for at least the first few years.

And they will save us 3-4 hours each-way, and B3k-5k return, compared to our travelling via Swampy as at present, so they could offer us lower-fares than at present or charge slightly-more than BKK-Gulf, and still have a price-advantage !

Qatar & Emirates already fly to Phuket, so when will it be Chiang Mai's turn ? I have a dream !

Why must I be joking, any more than this whole thread is humorous, encouraging out-of-the-box thinking ?

If it saves 3-4 hours each-way on a trip to Europe, and offers the chance of a saving-on-price too, surely many local expats would welcome it ? Chiang Mai could be more than a local-hub, if the numbers added-up, we're not talking daily jumbo-jets or anything like that !

OK so it would be a medium-length/thin route, but it's just within-range for the narrow-bodied jets, and easily within-range for a smaller wide-body like the B767 or A332 or the new B787.

And if farang tourists do seem to head first for the beaches or Bangkok, well their third target is surely the culture/nature which Chiang Mai offers, I recall seeing plenty of 2-centre holidays in the Kuoni-brochures many years ago,

I can well imaging tourists arriving direct into Phuket, relaxing on the beach then getting a low-cost-carrier up here, and flying back from Chiang Mai to Europe via one of the booming Gulf-hubs. Or vice versa.

I like your post/question comment on someone tipping less because the cost went up. It seems to be typical here, and it's a pitty they make hardly enough to live on as it is.

Everyone would like to see Chiangmai turn into their little city, town, or country back home with all the conveniences they used to have before coming here. If the service and other things aren't just what they are used to, they complain. It would be nice if most would just accept the things here, and go home when they want the niceties at home. Chiangmai has already changed for the worse from when I arrived many years ago. We are starting to look like every other big city with the traffic, concrete buildings, large billboards everywhere, etc. etc. Many of us come here to live and raise families because they don't have all the trappings of the West. Try to find some of the uniqueness here while there is some left.

You're right, I did completely miss that, perhaps an appropriate smiley might have got the message across, in a way simple-enough for my simple-brain.

Regarding Arab food, I believe that some poo-yai Chiang Mai Thais are very enthusiastic fans of 'mutton-grabs', to the point where they prefer to live in Dubai.
