BANGKOK: -- A woman noticed a "suicidal man" on a Web board, felt his pain and decided to reach out with a caring heart.

While the man soon said she had become the light of his life, the truth was that he had told many women the same thing and viewed them all as his victims.

"He has committed more than 100 crimes during the past three years," Metropolitan Police commissioner Lt-General Kamronwit Toopkrajang said yesterday.

One of the victims of suspect Chakorn "Ome" Boonchern, aged 33, was so angry that she slapped him in the face at the Metropolitan Police Bureau yesterday.

Stolen items

Chakorn was arrested on Sunday night at a flat in Bangkok's Lat Phrao district. Found in his room were 136 apparently stolen items, namely, handbags, ATM cards, credit cards, computer notebooks and cellphones.

"I can't explain why I was so gullible. But I believe all of us would feel the same for another fellow human being when he said he was thinking about committing suicide," the victim said, speaking on condition that her name was withheld.

"I offered words of encouragement and we began chatting online and on the phone," she said. "After a week, he invited me to meet him and his parents, saying that he wanted to thank me in person."

He described himself as a son of a famous politician and claimed his surname was "Thienthong", she added. When they met, he told her to get a facial massage before meeting his parents, so that she had a "neat" look.

"He offered to carry my handbag for me. I didn't suspect anything because he also put his purse and cellphone in there," she said. "But after I came out of the massage room, I found that he was gone."

She headed straight to Lat Phrao police station to file a complaint and found that four other women had already lodged similar complaints.

Another victim said she had met Chakorn online in the same way and, at his insistence, agreed to meet him at a coffee shop in Bang Na district.

"He suggested that I get my hair washed and set before meeting his parents. I agreed, only to find out that he had run off with my bag [while I was being treated]," she said.

'Don't become a victim'

She said she hoped her case would serve to remind women not to fall victim to such a ruse because of a soft heart. "Don't believe anyone too fast," said the woman, who has since founded a Facebook page called "Hunt Down Ai Ome". As of yesterday, the page had 2,866 "likes".

Kamronwit said five women had lodged rape complaints against Chakorn, too.

Chakorn, who appeared stressed at yesterday's press conference, said: "I plead guilty to all theft charges, but not to sexual assault. You can check recordings from security cameras that all those women walked out of the rooms normally, and some even held my hand."

Chakorn said he had lived off his victims for the past three years, during which time he had also given his wife and their child Bt15,000 a month.

Maj-General Pisit Pisutsak, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said Chakorn had regularly moved from one rented place to the next so as to avoid arrest and suspicion.

"We managed to track him down this time because he contacted a professional photographer who had just lost his camera on Saturday night. He claimed he would return the camera if he got a Bt30,000 reward," Pisit said. "The photographer alerted the police."

A confession is normally enough, but keeping all the victim's purses and ID cards to give to the BIB as evidence is being REALLY helpful. D'OH!

This is exactly what thousands of Thai women do with stupid farangs.

You beat me to it

There was a recent thread about whether learning English is an advantage for Thais.

Here's an example, this guy would have had more victims, and probably wealthier, if he didn't just stick with Thai language.

Think big!

Yes and Thai men too. Thai women may be racist but they do not discriminate when it comes to money. They devour lambs as well as sheep!

The positive news here is that all or most of the ladies conned by this rascal will be able to get their possessions back as most of the purses seem to have ID cards attached.

I think his mom or sister (who worked in the professional bar business) taught him this trick. Women want equal rights but when a man does this it's a slap in the face!

Really..? Stealing credit cards, handbags, phones, computers... not to mention the rape allegations... darn these crazy women for making a fuss... I see the 'bitter-at-women' squad came out the traps pretty fast today.

I'm not sure how much these women were really motivated by their kind hearts. This guy claimed to be a son of Snoh Tienthong, a super wealthy former politician with a very shady background. The women were excited at the thought of meeting the guy's famous parents with the implication that they might become part of the notorious clan - like winning the lottery. They were too greedy and stupid to do any research on the family before handing over their valuables to this obvious schmuck.

I wonder how much the 'son of a famous politician' played a part in their sympathy hiss hiss.

not sure this can be compared to middle aged farangs walking around with young beautiful thai

girls and not expecting their wallets to empty quickly...pure blindness or plain stupidwub.png

Komchadleuk's take on the story:

http://www.komchadlu...ml#.UDN01KDMY2E

Apparently one of the tricks he used was to take a taxi with a victim somewhere and then claim to suddenly have breathing problems due to heart disease and ask the victim to quickly get out and get him something warm to drink. He would then tell the taxi driver to drive away taking the ladies valuables with him.

One of the victims set up a Facebook page "The hunt for Ohm"

Yes that is so true about thai women beware.

three posts to turn this into the old Thai women are evil discussion.

I honestly cant understand why you lot don't just wash your hands of them and be done with it, rather than lurking around a web forum waiting for another chance to get your digs in.

It would leave Thailand a better place for those of us not yet bitter.

He is what we in America call a "playa" quite a common practice here in America only they never really get arrested and paraded around as in that country.
