I dream that one day all working Thais will earn a living wage. What a disgrace.

Which part is the disgrace? Your dream, this thread, or the unsubstantiated claim of a banned OP?

200 baht a day is livable for the average Thai.

Try living on 8 dollars an hour in NYC or anywhere else in US. No insurance either. Do you know how much it costs to see a doctor in the US?

I've talked to employees of Lotus in 17 provinces which have told me they pay a starting salary of around 6-7,000 baht a month working 6 days a week at 8 hours a day these HUGE corporations should have the money to pay a meager 7,600 baht a month minimun for those working 48 hours a week! The LOCAL merchants have an excuse for the lakc of funding in wages for employees. But the monopolies of Lotus and 7-11 whose franchise owners usually make over 10,000 baht per day per store is disgusting how they exploit employees, I wouldnt be shocked if some of you on TV were in the slimebag business here...

Blimey, you sure get around, 17 provinces eh. WOW

Let's see.

First off, $8/hr is below the legal minimum wage in NYC and even illegal immigrants won't work for that wage.

Second, I think something like 1-2% of Americans earn minimum wage.

Now, what % of Thais live on minimum wage?

Many types of Slime, not all bad. But really how can any of you negative posters deny a decent (300) wage for low wage workers, one poster mentioned its a fare wage for a Thai to live on. be fecked, many have extended family to look after and 200 is enough, crap. Dont buy Cigs,Grog,go out, medicine, schooling, its a long list. What a joke my hackles are rising.

Medical and schooling is free in Thailand (at least at government schools and hospitals) grog is pretty much what they buy ( rice Whisky) admittedly they could do with a bit more.

But dont forget that is minimum wage. There are an awful lot of thais who earn MORE than that.

Depending on your province. 6000 Baht is a decent wage by Thai standards.

Come again? Are we talking about Thailand in whole or which part of Thailand are we talking about now?

After a probationary period Tesco Lotus pattaya are paying some of their cashiers 11 K+ baht a month.

Still many quit.

Outside tourist areas. Minimum is 259 Baht in Ranong, assume a 25 day working month, actually gives about 7000 Baht, if they can get 259 Baht

I live in Nakhon Si Thammarat and this is def. not a tourist area and here they make 10 k a month so whatever number you pulled up must have come from a really poor district.

Just so we are clear - even Thais cant live on b6k a month.

Rent minimum will be 1200.w elec

Food b2500

Transport b500

Phone 100

Toiletries 150

Household 75

That is 5k.

No, it's 4525 Baht, which leaves 1475 Baht. So why can't a Thai live on 6000Baht?

I have lived with 5600 baht a month because of an odd attempt to live the locals did in a province god forgot about and let me tell you something. If you wanna eat rice with canned fish or chilipaste every day for the rest of your life then sure it's doable but that's not exactly how you pictured it... is it?

suppose they could walk around naked, have no children. Education is NOT FREE, and not entirely the right type of Education which leads me to another thought, If I was in the same boat, I,d seriously think about Liberating a few Dollars from Farang, Keep I,m down and they will get up one day. Thank you.

Yeah, basically it's slave labor. My Thai boyfriend works (outside of BKK,) for a department store and they pay him 200 baht/day and he works 11 hours a day, 6 days a week. What provinces have the 300 baht/day wage now? Obviously, the province we're living in doesn't have it....THIS is why our goal is to go back to my home (America) so we can save money.

Not trying to be contrary but, what are his plans for working in America? Min. wage there is certainly not livable (hope you make enough to support your family)

I have been to many department stores here and if you want to call what those people do there "work," I would beg to differ.

If he has the language skills to work at a dept. store in the US he will be expected to work, to know the merchandise, and to politely and professionally engage customers.

Not saying he doesn't have the minerals to succeed in the US, but something to think about.

I'm sorry...but how do you know that he doesn't work hard? Have you ever been in a department store at all? My boyfriend is fluent in English (not that he needs to speak it really since there are few falangs around here,) and the department store is new, so he is constantly helping them move boxes, etc, as well as managing the cash registrar, as well as driving to Hat Yai to pick up supplies, etc. Does that qualify as work to you??

Well, he's aiming to go to cooking school and work in a Thai restaurant over there (which by the way...I talked with a thai immigration attorney, and in some places she told me Thai chefs can make as much as 30,000 dollars/year). ALSO, minimum wage where I come from is one of the highest in the country, along with the fact that I am planning on getting my masters degree....so, yes. We DO plan on making fairly decent money there, especially compared to what we make here.....

My post prior, was rounding numbers and giving estimates. There are loads of other costs as wrll to bring it easily to 6k.

Plus...these are no hope jobs.

My gf cum wife only makes b8k per month in bkk for one of her pt jobs, but it wa

s b400 for 7hrs straight shift. Easy work. Her other job was only 4hrs daily for that she was paid 6k month, that job was sporadic as the tv station could not keep the shows in the time slot on air.

Her new job is 15k w- some health benefits. Im happy abt that but its still slave wages.

Foreigners have addl expenses. Your experiment is invalid because you will return to your money and your reality. Bills, emergencies can be put off. Further, 99% of expats could never survive on type, quantity and quality of b15 meal, esp daily.

Even for Thais in this position, they rob Peter to pay Paul.

Even maids in Pattaya were paid 6k plus food and housing and that was years ago. No one is working ten hour days in bkk for 6k sure.

Are US wages really that low? My Thai stepson (aged 21) earns $850 a week in Australia as a cook in a Thai restaurant.
