True Internet and Pattaya are starting a three-year, 100-million-baht project to build a free public WiFi network which will cover 80% of the city in the first year and 100% by 2015. Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Khunplome said the free citywide public service will boost tourist numbers by 7-10% from the current annual average of 5.5 million. Pattaya has signed a three-year agreement with True for the public WiFi project, with an option for renewal every three years. Users will need to register for usage which will be limited to 5 hours per month. Thai residents can register with their ID cards and foreigners with their passports, registration will need to be renewed every 3 months. So far, 1000 wifi hotspots have been installed with the numbers expected to double in the next two years.

Scenario according to Pattaya City Heads:-

"Hey, let's all go to Pattaya next year because we can get 5hrs a month free WiFi after we register with our passport, what a great deal".

Who are these idiots trying to convince that this will increase tourist numbers by a minimium 385,000 next year, what world are they in, not the real world.

Maybe it will, probably it won't but at least some people can get free wifi, those who can't afford it, it will let them get on line.

Be positive dude, are you at the end of your tether with Pattaya? Been there too long?

A 100 million baht for a few people to have internet who can't afford it, c'mon, it is cheap with your smart phone plan or dongle these days.

It states it is designed to attract up to 500,000 people a year with the carrot being dangled of 5 hours of free internet.

On a trip to Pattaya, that cost would never be factored into your budget, it is an incidential cost.

Almost every holet/guesthouse in the country has free WiFi not to mention most good restaurants, McDonalds, Starbucks, the list goes on.

I have just spent 1 month travelling up on the Mekong & never went without WiFi in a hotel & in the majority of restaurants, some in small towns.

This is just lunacy & another example of the waste that the City of Pattaya is becoming famous for.

That money would be better spent fixing footpaths & roadways, not to mention supplying some parking for the people who do visit Pattaya from around Thailand. These people aren't on package tours like our Russian, Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese freinds, they actually spent money here in hotels & restaurants, not on a prepaid package from their home Country.

Look at the pedestrian lights around Pattaya that are turned off on the weekend & the dangerous lights all along Pattaya Nua. A motorbike rider will be killed one day by these stupid structures. The lights are so high, that you can't see them when you are in your car or on the bike, they need to be lowered about 2-3 metres to be effective.

Your are right on one point, I must need a rest in my Country to recharge the brain to cope with the illogical attitude in this City.

You need to take a chill pill and worry about more important things than this. Saying that, I agree with you, thinking people are going to come to Pattaya just because of free internet is deranged.

Right - we all know the real reason people go to Pattaya! Free internet is defiitely not the number one attraction of sin city. However, it is a nice bit of "icing on the cake" for tourists who do consider these things when making vacation plans. I know for myself, it has become one of my prime criteria when choosing hotels. It used to be swimming pools and facilites- now it is connectivity. Gotta have it, and free definitely goes to the top of the short-list..

Seems I have a true public internet spot in my Moo Bann, I couldn't for the life of me work out where it was and why True would bother putting one in range of my home..

I finally worked out that many True customers are unwittingly hosting public access points, the guy next door had no idea.

We switched off his router and the True Public Access Point disappeared.
