I'm going to use the "M" word. Microsoft has a very good spyware aplication now. It is a beta release and it is free right now. I think they will charge later or bundle it, anyway. I have tried many of the ones you mention and have had varying degrees of success. But for me the spyware de jour is the one form Microsoft. :o

Here's the direct Microsoft link for the AntiSpyware program:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/8/1...wareInstall.exe

Mods, please don't remove this, it is a completely free app, I just provided the direct link for the user's "convenience" :o

Thanks for the link but I CAN'T validate windows so I can't download this.

Please would someone recomended what apps to use from my list and also recomend any other free anti spyware programes preferably from my list but I'd like to know the free ones too.

I have looked at the pinned posts ad have downloaded spybot recomended by TV but i'd like TV members opinion.

Thanks Ash

I really don't see the problem, you need to validate Windows to get the direct download link, but once you have the file I linked above you can just install it, and it does update to its latest definition files.

Sorry Florin bit tired and miss read. Thanks for your help I'll use my dial LONGBAND to download now and see if it works.

Thanks for you help

Spybot

Adaware

and Hijack this ,

will take care of all your spyware needs.

Run Spybot, then run adaware.........and then if you are VERY VERY careful run hijack this.

Please back up your computer (system restore) before running hijackthis, it is a fantastic program and will remove toolbars and hijackers but it also list LOTS of things you dont want to remove.

If you would like you could post a screenshot of your hijackthis scan and let me or someone here look at it for you before you remove anything listed in it after scanning.

That CD you have is full of SPYWARE, many of those programs are bunk...no offense to the owner...:o

I find that no single anti-spyware will catch them all so I run the same suite that nosamesame suggests: Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Hijack This. I tried the Microsoft version some time ago and it created several problems (performance and interferance) for me and had to remove it. The ones above do a good job (IMHO).

I have tried the freebie spyware programs and have come to the conclusion that you get what you pay for.

I read an interesting computer magazine article that reviewed various spyware software. They made certain recommendations which I followed.

(I won't mention which one I chose for fear that I may be looked upon as promoting a certain product. I can assure the mods that I have no affiliation with the recommended software)

Having downloaded the software I let it run on my machine. I was amazed at the amount of spyware the program found on my computer. All of the freebie software had missed these.

I then ran the same program on my g/f's computer. (she was also using SpyBot at the time)

The program froze with the the amount of rubbish it found and I was forced to run it again is short stages to clear her hard drive of spyware.

I now subscribe to the makers of this software and have deleted the freebie programs from our respective computers.

Maybe Microsoft's new spyware software will set the standard one day, but that day ain't here yet.

Read the article for yourselves.

I think that the best anti-spyware/adware is yourself. Best practices and a bit of common sense will go a long way to keeping them out of your system, so you don't have to go hunting for them.

First and foremost: Ditch IE (internet explorer). It's a spyware/adware magnet, and also the most vulernable to infection. Use Opera or Firefox instead. If you find a web that they can't handle, then turn to IE as a last resort.

Second: When going to unknown webs, turn off Java/Javascript. It's a major loophole for infections (after activescript, of course, which is in IE).

Third: Use active antivirus scanning. This is generally recommended.

May I suggest that you download Counterspy and try it. They have a 15 day fully functioning trial period.

Run your Microsoft spyware program before Counterspy and see if Counterspy can find anything on your system that Microsoft misses.

Well I did what you said and it missed 46 items but Im still not gonna pay for it, the items it missed were of low theat and could be ignored. I did this on my GF computer and she has been on some websites like free smilies and fun cards and site like this, this is where alot of it came from.

I would recomend to anyone to try Counter Spies free trial and see whats lurking.

Good advice. :o

The yearly fee is very small.

Why would anybody spend top dollar on a computer system and then put it as risk with free spyware software for the sake of saving $20 per year?

It's like buying a Rolls Royce, never insuring it and taking it to some unqualified, backyard mechanic for repairs.

It doesn't make sense to me.

Some of the programs listed on that cd are almost certainly spyware themselves. It's always a good idea to Google the name of any anti spyware to see if it is legit. There's a list from a guy called Eric Howes who has tested most anti spyware programs that tells you which programs are suspect. You should find it at spywarewarrior.com, it is an interesting read.

It doesn't make sense to me.

The ONLY thing that makes sense to me is - drum roll ....incremental backups.

A system failure, who do you trust "paid or free" - which one will come to the rescue. Who gives a F.

YBB

Backing up incrementally is a very wise practice, but it would be a better practice to eliminate all traces of spyware/viruses from your system prior to backing up.

Incremental spyware/virus scanning would be equally appropriate. Which software do you trust?

Probably the combination of two. One paid for and perhaps one free. :o

Which software do you trust?

Mighty,

Paid for software can be a problem too. Apparently True Image 9 has had all sorts of problems but seems to be getting ironed out now. Here's what I use:

True Image 8 :o

AVG

Microsoft Anti Spyware

ZoneAlarm

Yahoo email (1st defence!)

Opera

My email gets checked by Yahoo first. I can remember once over the years I had a virus pop-up with AVG. I've never used my ISP's email.

I have a router with security so ZoneAlarm is really only for trojans that could access the net.

I don't do masses of music downloads or games or whatever on P2P which I think increases your odds of getting infected.

The only time I've had problems is with dodgy copies of XP (not anymore!) and twice spent a weekend installing everything again. That was before I started doing full backups and if I ever happen to have a problem using the above software I can go back a few backups if necessary and do a restore which takes 15 mins. Any really important stuff, I zip up and store on the net.

youbloodybeauty,

This thread is about spyware and you have the freebie Microsoft alone on your system.

I suggest you re-read the OP's post #18 and be aware that Microsoft's spyware program is not the greatest available. Trial Counterspy and come back with the results.

Mighty,

I forgot one program from the above - WindowWasher.

The reason why I mentioned those others is because they all help to keep my system free from Spyware, Trojans and backup's nail it. Using Opera rather then IE is a big help too.

Here are the results:

METASTOCK ANTISPYWARE

Spyware Scan Details

Start Date: 2/02/2006 9:20:52 PM

End Date: 2/02/2006 9:23:45 PM

Total Time: 2 mins 53 secs

Detected Threats

No spyware threats were found during this scan.

COUNTERSPY

Detected 1 Item:

Weatherbug

Type: Low Risk Adware

Level: Low

Author: WeatherBug

Description: Weatherbug is an ad supported desktop weather applicaton that provides updates on weather conditions and displays real time temperatures in the taskbar icon.

Advice: This is a low risk adware application and will not cause direct harm to your computer, removing it is not required. However, it is strongly recommended that you review this application's End User License Agreement (EULA) as well as review the application's privacy policies.

===================================

Should I pay for it? I don't think my risk is high enough make it worth paying. Do you?

Cheers YBB

Good advice.

More precaution on HijackThis! - great Ap, but only use it if you are an advanced PC user...

Also, i had some infections that both Spybot and adaware (i use both) could not fix, and was advised to try Eiwido Anti-Malware (free 30 day trial free from their website) which cleaned it out.

just download it, install the update, use it and uninstall after the 30 days is up.

cheers!

Youbloodybeauty,

If Counterspy found only one low risk entry that Microsoft missed, it probably isn't worth buying Counterspy in your case.

If you are the type of surfer who rarely visits many different suspect sites each day (as in porn sites and the likes) and doesn't download free applications, (screensavers etc.) your chances of being infected are very small.

The other defensive programs that you are using on your computer should keep you safe.

Just keep in mind that regularly backing up your data does not prevent infection, it is a practice that saves your work and keeps a working model of your system on another drive in case of a disaster to your main drive.

I have found that Zone Alarm Pro is the best and easiest. Automatic updates and scans. You should have a good firewall anyways so pay for the firewall and get the anti spy-ware and pop up blocker free.

My Windows is legal so I had MS beta installed as well as a couple of the other free spy-ware programs. Zone Alarm found things that none of the rest found.
