September 6, 201213 yr Second test today of Bangkok's flood The Nation BANGKOK: -- The government will run water-drainage test in the eastern part of Bangkok today to study the efficiency of its flood diversion tunnel and the capacity of canals to handle large amounts of rainfall, the National Water Resources and Flood Policy Committee (NWRFPC) said yesterday. It has also approved Bt300 million to support flood-prevention facilities, including pumps to push water out to sea in Nonthaburi province’s Bang Kruay district. Officials have also come up with a plan to help big cities such as Bangkok, Sukhothai and Songkhla to tackle future flooding. The drainage test in eastern Bangkok, conducted by NWRFPC, will run from 2pm to 4pm today. The water agency will open the watergate at Khlong Song canal and release 3 cubic metres per second. Water will flow through Khlong Thanon near Phaholyothin road, Khlong Lat Phrao canal and the Rama IX flood-diversion tunnel into the Chao Phraya. More water will flow from Bang Bau canal and Bang Khen canal to the Chao Phraya. Officials predict that the Bang Khen canal will be a weak point in the test, as water will flow close to Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and Lat Phrao Soi 56. "Today will be a turning point in dealing with Bangkok flooding if the drainage test can run smoothly," Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute director Dr Royol Chitradon, a member of NWRFPC, said. "The success of today’s drainage test will mean that we can handle large amounts of water and drain it all over a 45-day [period]," he added. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, meanwhile, said the committee did not release large volumes of water during the tests on Wednesday in the western part of Bangkok because it would have affected several residential areas along the canals. " The amount of water the committee discharged into the canals to run the drainage test was calculated by experts. It was enough to reflect the physical conditions and capacity of the canal to deal with flooding," she said. Meanwhile, Royol said his team would spend the next two days examining the preliminary test results and the next 30 days coming up with a conclusive report. Science and Technology Minister Plodprasob Surassawadee, who chairs the NWRFPC, said he would order the committee to stop today 's test if the rainfall exceeds 30 millimetres per hour. He added the government has also come up with a plan to save other big cities such as Sukhothai and Songkla from flooding. Under the plan, the government will build floodways to divert water to flow outside the city. This should also help for the next five to 10 years, especially in areas where people are blocking waterways. The government will also install a drainage system linking each canal and install water pumping devices. " We will not let floods flow into the big cities," he said. -- The Nation 2012-09-07 UPDATE 8am Water agency cancels Friday water flow testing on east side of Bangkok after heavy rain, flooding in many locations /MCOT
September 6, 201213 yr Popular Post The part I read yesterday that encouraged me was the fact that they had identified weak points such as low lying bridges, canal 's narrowing etc. If they can go work on these weak points then everyone will be a winner in the end. As the levee's showed at New Orleans.........it's the weak points that cause the carnage......keep working at them, just keep working at them. I say big Like for these tests........keep it going.

The pumps are very important to Bangkok's flood defenses, particularly from the local rain (as opposed to rain coming down from the North). Most of the klongs are at or below sea level, so to keep the water flowing and actually get it out of the system they need to use pumps to get it out of the klongs and into the sea.

September 7, 201213 yr Author Water agency cancels water flow testing east of Bangkok after heavy rain BANGKOK, Sept 7 – The plan to test water draining preparedness in eastern Bangkok’s canal system on Friday have been cancelled due to the large amount of rain yesterday, according to Dr Royal Chitradon, chairman of the Water and Flood Management Commission's sub-committee on water situation analysis. Dr Royal, who directs the Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute, said the rainfall was measured at 60-90 millimetres over wide areas, raising the water level in Klong Song to 1.02 metres from mean sea level despite no additional water from upstream being discharged to the canal. He said that last night, all equipment prepared for the test was used to drain the water. All seven water pushing machines drained water satisfactorily and effectively within two hours. It was seen that the water level downstream in Klong Lat Phrao dropped quickly. Dr Royal said the water agency will discuss today whether the drainage test in Bangkok's’ eastern canals should be rescheduled. The government’s first test was conducted Wednesday along the canal network in the west side of the capital. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the overall testing on Wednesday was completed satisfactorily–both in terms of the performance of government officials and the flow of water. The test is aimed at helping the water agency to evaluate the effectiveness of the canals and pumps in draining water into the sea in preparation of the northern run-off in October. September 7, 201213 yr prob not a result of this test but the river but today looks like someone dumped about 8,000,000 tonnes of those water lilly weed things in it and yet the BMA sends out a few of those little yellow canoes with a motor on the back and two poor blokes with shovel sized scoopy things to pick it up. they will be there for years. This stuff appeared overnight like it has been flushed from every clogged up klong in the city.
