Someone banged on my apartment door at night and when I went to open it a Thai man looked at me and said "dick."

I didn't know what to make of what he said.

I motioned for him to go away and while he was looking around the inside of my apartment from the doorway, I closed the door.

I reported the incident to my apartment (I'm on vacation looking for peace and quiet and don't know any Thai people as yet).

My apartment told me to report it to the tourist police.

The tourist police said the Thai man was looking for someone who stayed in my apartment before me whose name was "Dick."

Sounds suspicious and made for an uncomfortable moment.

If it would have been a nice young girl knocking at my door in the middle of the night, asking for dick? I would have certainly been able to help her out.

But in the OPs case, I would have just shut the door and forgot all about it. Or if he`s still worried, hire a detective, a private dick.

The Thai word dek can sound rather like the English name Dick particularly if you don't speak Thai. It means child. Perhaps he thought a child was in your place. It is also slang for virtually all jobs done by young people with no prestige attached. e.g. Petrol pump attendant, waiter, prostitute. Was your apartment previously used as a knocking shop?

When I lived in Holland, we regularly had blokes knocking on the door as the previous occupants had been a pair of Eastern European hookers!
