Thailand's skin-whitening craze reaches woman's intimate areas

Critics say vaginal whitening wash is extreme example of how cosmetic industry has changed Thai definition of beauty

Kate Hodal in Bangkok

BANGKOK: -- A new product said to make women's intimate areas "fairer within four weeks" has revived the beauty debate in colour-conscious Thailand, where fair skin is associated with opportunity, success and status, and caused critics to question when, if ever, the skin-whitening craze will end.

Products promising to lighten the face, body and armpits are already available across the country, with skin-whitening pills and diet supplements claiming to pick up where the cosmetics leave off. But this is the first time that a vaginal whitening wash has hit the Thai market.

In the adverts, which are available online, on TV and on radio, a fair-skinned woman in skinny jeans wanders into her closet to change clothes, describing how "everyone wants to look good – but tight shorts can leave your skin darker".

The camera then zooms in on her new outfit, which includes a pair of white shorts, to a voiceover claiming that Lactacyd White Intimate can make skin in that area become "bright and translucent".

The launch of a similar product in India this year was met with international disdain after a TV advert insinuated that having a fairer vagina would make women more attractive to men. In Thailand, however, the companies responsible say they have been successful.

"Products [have] evolved from face-whitening to body and deodorant solutions to even out dark areas in the armpits," said Louis-Sebastien Ohl of Publicis Thailand, which created the adverts. "Now an intimate toiletry also offers a whitening benefit, because research evidenced that … women [are] keen to have such a product." [more...]

The author must not have done too much research unless this is the first time such products are available in Thailand ... https://www.google.c...biw=886&bih=499 & http://en.wikipedia..../Anal_bleaching

A poorly researched news story? Here?

This can only serve as a reminder that I have yet to see it all....

Next - vaginal tanning creams in the West....

A poorly researched article ... in the UK .... => The Guardian.

Hmmm, it seems they forgot to hire me for the QC team. Perhaps they were concerned that I may be too honest when reporting on whether or not the test subject's "intimate" parts appeared "whiter" after numerous long, lengthy, personal examinations !

Of note for the guys:

"But the skin-whitening craze looks set to continue. The male market is yet to be fully tapped, said Ohl, who added that future variants of Lactacyd White Intimate would be formulated to include anti-ageing properties, "so you can keep intimate parts fresh and young" as well."

LOL - is there really a market for people who want their winkies looking fresh and young ? And no, I won't be on that QC team either !

Teeth whitening

Skin whitening

Armpit whitening

Butt crack whitening

Vaginal whitening

Are there any areas left?

Yes "nipple whiting" is very popular in Thailand: i.e. trying to make the areola pink.

Have never understood the armpit whitening stuff, have never noticed that anyone had a dark armpit to be honest, and if you were of a darker complexion, wouldn't you look ridiculous with brilliant white armpits and the rest of your body being darker? Honestly, these products are largely hocum anyway, and get through to market here because there is almost no requirement to substantiate the claims. Have to admire the marketing people though, they have managed to make people paranoid about a part of their body that they never paid any attention to whatsoever, and never even realised that it was dark or not. It is like worrying about the colour of the inside of your nose.

I always have a giggle when they are selling breast enlargement creams. They round up 3 birds who have bigger boobs than the average, truss them up in low cut tops two sizes too small, and make a one hour discussion about how it made their boobs bigger. Aside from anything else, in other parts of the world, these feminine hygiene washes are discouraged because they damage the natural healthy bacterial balance of a woman's genitals. God only knows what a whitening agent is going to do down there. It is all pseudo science and old wives tales. I would presume a massive increase in cases of thrush is imminent.

Skin pigmentation can be higher in skin folds than elsewhere.

Why would women want vaginal whitening? Unless they intend to become strippers, appear in porn photos, shows and movies, nude modelling, work in the sex industry or sleep with they`re bosses or clients to obtain job.promotions.

The only reasons someone would want to improve the appearance of their sex organs is to impress, which means they intend to take they`re clothes off at some point and who would these women want or need to impress with their vaginas? Only for professional reasons and gain, I would guess.

I think you may have just hit the jackpot for the next product.
