[Myanmar] Shimizu To Re-Open Rangoon Office

Shimizu Corporation, one of Japan’s largest engineering and construction companies, plans to reopen its Rangoon branch office next Monday, according to a statement on the company’s website. First opened in 1996, the office became dormant after 1999 due to the shrinking of Burma’s construction market, the statement said. Noting strong Japanese interest in two special economic zones to be set up in Thilawa and Dawei, the company said it expected a boom in industrial construction. However, it also noted several drawbacks, such as the country’s lack of electricity and real estate for foreign expatriates.
