Carry Concealed Gun In Chiang Mai?

Featured Replies

How can a foreigner obtain a permit to carry a concealed gun in Chiang Mai? Also, are there gun shops that will sell to foreigners?

Hard enough for a foreigner to even own a gun in Thailand (Work permit, house registration, criminal background check). Last I heard, a person can only have a gun at home, at the range or locked up in the trunk while transporting between the two.

You have to be an American to come out with something like this ? What do you need to carry a gun around with you for ?

As already said it is a very hard process to go through just to obtain a permit never mind one to carry a concealed gun. I think you have to be able to prove that you are in the gold bullion business or gems business and so have an excuse to need to carry a gun for protection.

Chiang Mai isn't exactly Dodge city

Is it just in Chiang Mai that you need to carry it? wink.png

Bad enough that there are already farangs carrying concealed knives in C.M. and stabbing to death guys they meet in snooker halls.

Go for it. Bad stuff happens. Good to be prepared!

A gun for protection is such a bullsh*t reason.

He can conceal it OK, but the question is, will he ever find it again!!??

It would perhaps be far more practical to hire a plainclothes bib if you have a legitimate need for that kind of protection.

You need a blue book and a letter of recomendation as a starter. From there you are fingerprinted and if it comes back clean you can apply. Usually you need a character letter from someone senior in the police or government and a reason. If sporting then a club membership, if you have been threatened and can even show this, and want it for self defence NO chance as you might actually use it. I repeat NO CHANCE. If for defence of home then you can if you have very substantial assets in your name and can show bank balance (on theory if you have nothing then what are you protecting). Hand gun shops are more abundant in Bangkok but still very expensive due to import restrictions on numbers and import tax.

No good reason at all for carrying concealed in Thailand and its frightening that someone would ask. Too easy to use when someone cuts you off in traffic or you are full of squirt. Sometimes Thais do just mouth off, waiving a Glock around does not improve the situation. Would you want to stay inThailand if Thais carried concealed! (serving, past and prospective MP's exempted)

Crazy crazy crazy....this sort of stuff frightens the shit out of me and all it does it lead to more people wanting to carry because they are apprehensive about others that are carrying. Its just a vicious circle. Then we have the show and tell my Glocks bigger than your Glock, just buy an Iphone 5 if you want to impress.

There are far easier and more established ways get rid of the ladies sellng those wooden frogs.

Yes, American. Personal protection is the reason. I have heard that some foreigners carry guns illegally, but having a permit would seem a better way to go. Such permits are widely available in the US.

Why conceal it, guns are beautiful.

No definately American male and the avatar is a picture of the wife.

next you will be telling us all that guns don't kill

I can't see anyone feeling the need to walk around Thailand carrying a loaded gun simply for protection. Chiang Mai especially

Maybe it is your attitude that needs to change now you have moved here. This isn't the Bronx or Harlem you are now living in but the Land Of Smiles.

I have lived here for nearly 9 years and travelled to every part of it, often alone and never once felt at all threatened at any time.

I've been here 10 and there have been times I wished I'd been carrying a piece. If you think all the civilians in CM are unarmed, you are living in a dream world. I desire to do it legally.

I think the OP might have lived here longer than you. wink.png

Edit: Sorry mesquite we seem to be saying the same thing at same time.

Lets look through the topics around this one.

AFL grand final

The great avocado rip off

Yep, I can see the need now.

No one should have to pay 65 baht for an imported avacado. Its criminal.

I'm with Thailandbert on this one, never felt threatened....but I would be if I saw a concealed carry weapon....and yes they can often be identified especially when someone wants to impress as a casual warning with a jaunty swing of the cardigan.

Your still alive and you havent killed anyone.. are you sure you could say the same thing if you had a piece.

The idea of letting people carry weapons is crazy, they get drunk / angry and kill others. Please as little as possible firearms around. Of course criminals carry guns sad fact.. but the more guns are carried the higher the chance to get killed if someone goes cowboy.

I had a friend come here to Thailand. in the one year he had had several fights, been stabbed, arrested and told if he didn't leave the island he was going to be shot. Why has this guy had all this happen to him and none of it ever happen to me.

ATTITUDE

I don't go getting drunk in seedy parts of town, nor do I try to throw my weight about here like you see back home, nor do I get drunk and argue with the locals.

I would put it to you that you feel the need to carry a gun for your behaviour and not for that of the local population.

I spent several months up in CM and as said never once felt threatened by anyone.

Sorry if you are offended by this but it is you who is the problem here and not the locals and Thailand certainly doesn't need more gun toting lunatics running round.

I had a concealed weapon permit back in the States and quite an arsenal at home but can't imagine carrying here. It's not too hard to get a permit for a 12 gauge here for home protection if you really feel the need.

Thailandbert, I don't do any of that. Perhaps you are the one with the attitude problem.

When I visit the US, I pack heat, legally.

The way you speak about guns sounds like they make you feel your more man then without one. I never understood the concept of having to carry weapons to feel more manly.

Then please explain to me why if you do not do any of the things mentioned you still feel the need to carry a loaded gun when everyone else doesn't ?

Again can you tell me why you need to PACK HEAT when you visit the States ?

Just how many times have you had to shoot someone, obviously in self defense whilst you were minding your own business ?

At least the OP is asking if it's possible to do it legally.

Oh I forgot to add.

my attitude here in Thailand has meant I can go anywhere at any time even alone and drunk, never have even an argument and not feel the need to carry a gun at any time.

I don't think I have a attitude problem, especially one that needs a gun to back it up !
