Mayor seeks 3 billion baht for disabled sports facility

PATTAYA:--Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome wants to spend 3 billion baht to renovate the Pattaya Indoor Sports Arena to make it the nation’s main venue for disabled athletes.

Following Thailand’s strong finish at the 2012 Paralympics Games in London, Itthiphol met with Sports Association for the Disabled President Maj. Gen. Osoth Bhavilai Sept. 18 at city hall. The two outlined an agreement for Pattaya to transform the existing sports stadium on Soi Chaiyapruek 2 into a host site for the Paralympics Committee of Thailand.

The police general, who also heads the Paralympics Committee, wants the new facility to offer a swimming pool, care fitness center, training programs, ramps, accessible restrooms and doctors living on the premises. Work should be complete within three years, in time to train athletes for the next Paralympics, he said.

Somehow 3 billion seems WAY in excess.

of which about 90% will disappear and no facilaty completed. Good NEWS for mercedes Benz should it be granted.

Can't they just make some of the existing facilities, handicapped accessible?

I would have thought the disabled get enough excercise and workouts trying to maneuver through the streets, curbs, sidewalks and buildings - few are handicapped friendly. Wouldn't it be more practical to spend the 3 billion baht to improve their lives and mobility around Pattaya? I suspect 3 billion coming in for a project this large will involve large payoffs. The handicapped need facilities in Pattaya but it should benefit all of them not just a few atheletes.

I was thinking that, the stadium is pretty well kitted out already??

Maybe it was this bit that inflated the budget somewhat?? "doctors living on the premises"

That's 60,000,000 pounds ! What do they want to build , a whole village ! I live near stoke Mandeville , the home of para Olympics , and the facilities there are only around 10 million pounds , amazing thailand

Donald Trump just spent 60 M Pounds in Aberdeen, Scotland to create one of the best golf courses in the UK , likewise, the Pheonix golf course on Pattaya's outskirts and all it's land and facilities is currently for sale - same price!!

Something far from right with this sports stadium "transformation"?????
