BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is at a crossroads. One path would allow her true leadership to shine, while the other would see her remain a puppet.

Yingluck will soon make her choices in regard to a new line-up for the Cabinet. At today's Cabinet meeting, a prime ministerial order is expected to be debated and approved to dispense assignments in the wake of Yongyuth Wichaidit's exit.

Yongyuth's previous responsibilities for the interior portfolio, the position of deputy prime minister and other ad-hoc assignments will be reassigned to other Cabinet members.

PM's Office Minister Nivatthamrong Boonsongpaisal may become the caretaker at the Interior Ministry, or an alternative is Deputy Interior Minister Chuchart Hansawat.

Yongyuth's ad-hoc assignments will be given to Nivatthamrong.

Two deputy prime ministers, Chalerm Yoobamrung and Yuthasak Sasiprapha, will oversee work previously assigned to their former colleague Yongyuth.

Chalerm is likely to become the senior-most deputy who will be designated as acting prime minister should the need arise.

The work reassignment is seen as a stop-gap measure allowing the government to function until a successor for Yongyuth is appointed.

Because Yongyuth is entangled in a complex web of legal wrangling in connection with the Alpine land case, his chance for a speedy settlement of disciplinary, criminal and constitutional issues looks very slim. So, the possibility of him rejoining the Cabinet in the foreseeable future is nil.

His exit virtually forces PM Yingluck to reveal her leadership and play a bigger role in picking key ministers in her Cabinet.

According to insiders at Government House and in the Pheu Thai Party, four scenarios have emerged, anticipating how Yingluck will finalise her decisions.

In the first scenario, the prime minister will opt for a limited change by naming the new interior minister.

Close aides said Yingluck is likely to choose this option in order to avoid party infighting.

Among top contenders for the job is Pheu Thai manager Phumtham Wechayachai. An alternative choice is PM's Office Minister Nivatthamrong.

Regardless of who gets the job, real control over the ministry will remain within the family with collective decisions by Yingluck, her brother Thaksin and their sister Yaowapha Wongsawat.

Under the second scenario, the Cabinet will see a minor shuffle involving the Interior portfolio and a deputy prime minister's position.

If Yingluck chooses this option, Deputy Prime Minister Yuthasak is likely to become an odd man out.

Candidates to replace him include Thai Rak Thai veteran Pongthep Thepkanchana and retired national police chief Priewpan Damapong.

Under the first or second scenario, Yingluck will have a complete say in the matter.

Thaksin and Yaowapha will not veto whatever decision she makes because candidates for the job are also their loyal allies.

Limited change means she is fully in charge and can thwart pressure from various Pheu Thai factions to overhaul the ministerial line-up.

Under a third scenario, Yingluck may have to make a limited concession to factional demands. This would result in a mini reshuffle involving several portfolios.

If this happens, the ruling party should brace for repercussions from a fierce struggle between two groups of allies - Thai Rak Thai veterans and Pheu Thai regional bigwigs.

The fourth and final scenario is that party infighting will spiral out of control. If this occurs, it would prompt a major reshuffle in order to shore up government stability.

However, the last two scenarios appear unlikely to happen at this juncture.

He will be looking for some changes. He knows the PTP are a bunch of opportunistic chancers, so the question is whether he will push the red claims for greater involvement in cabinet positions. On this issue we will see if the stakes are being upped.

Look at the one that is directly related to Thaksin's devorced wife to fill the spot, and also brace for PT's desolving when Yongyuth's case finally goes to court on his legitimacy to lead the party, and be a MP because of the Alpine golf club land title case that was fraudulent. It is not over just because he stepped down from that post. He's still an MP. He is banking on the 2007 amnesty bill, but to qualify he had to serve his sentence, but he didn't.

Still quite amazing to see that this country openly recognizes that the government is heavily influenced by decisions made overseas by a fugitive from justice, and yet, does noting about it.

I totally disagree. It is about to burst and go back into a coup, more politics and more nails driven into the Thai coffin on the road to progress. The Shinawatra family can be held wholly responsible for the waste of money and lack of progress. As for keeping everything in the family as per the headline - betchoass - they have already stolen billion of Baht from their beloved Thai populace and have not been summonsed on a majority of outstanding charges...

While it may remain in the family, there is only one person who decides who does what and when certain changes are made...Thaksin

Regarding the PTP and the rebirth of the 111 group in waiting being seperate entities, they are not, both recognise Thaksin as the master of their collective destinies and await his bidding.

PTP / TRT aka Thaksins allies,along with the red / udd have only one agenda and that is to restore Thaksin to the position as leader / CEO of the ruling party en blok and whoever needs to be cast aside to achieve this will ruthlessly be so.

Only when or if he manages to get back into the country with his freedom and reputation intact will the real receiprients of his gratitude be known.

The second scenario being he will carry on as he is now the exiled CEO of the present adminstration

Until then he will be happy to let all of them believe they are part and parcel of his government in waiting.

God forbid it ever comes to pass if he is restored to his pre exiled position of CEO and the continuance of his corrupted self interests, disrespect and abuse of human rights and blatant minipulation of law any constitution in place in his favour, not forgetting the continual degrading / pillaging of the Thai coffers ect. ect.

Only if he dies will any significant infighting begin and boy will it be brutal, not only in the upper echelons of authority but sadly out on the streets up and down the country.

I did not see anything in the article to prove this point. Seems to me all scenarios are pretty much outside of her control. Yes, there is a soft option but that would hardly amount to shining leadership. If only she could be truly independent of the family & cronies then she would be a shining star.

It is a crossroads moment indeed that's been forced here. The whole set up is a hub and spoke centred around Thaksin, not YIngluck. He might have plans to eventually let her be Prime Minister while he is sprung free and gets to make lots of money and keep the wolves of the NACC at bay, but there is still so much 'reshuffling' from the top down, to be done in order to get the right men in place, and she on the other hand is still a complete political rookie. Let's not forget, PTP is a delicately balanced money-driven factional alliance that takes every inch of charismatic galvanising to keep it together. Thaksin is finding that difficult enough in his compromised position, Yingluck is out of her depth. Expect more of this to come.

Haven't they read of the perils of 'keeping it in the family'? I wonder what the Asian equivalent of the Hapsberg nose is? Thaksin is going all in to set up his little dynasty and he is just playing the waiting game at the moment. When he strikes it will be at a time when the people of this country will be in no mood for 'a fight'. If the Shiniwatra's were able to use the clear level of intellect they display when it comes to plotting and scheming, and direct it towards the benefit of this country and it's people then we would not be in the mess we are. However, this is all about 'me, me me'. Thaksin will settle for a 'Cambodia' model but I bet he has wet dreams of having the N Korea model. When he has either model, all you Thaksin / red lovers can debate where it all went wrong and how you were taken in, as you contribute to the forum from another country, having either fled or been forced out.

Marshbags, let's not forget the erosion of the grass roots support for this family.

There are serious warnings of major flooding up country over the weekend, and there must come a time when those affected are going to start asking when they are going to receive their just desserts for the support that they have given to this family.

As in everything the Shinawatra's do, they have trodden all over those who came out and demonstrated for them, and they have shown that they really don't give a s**t for their plight. Yingluck was off to the US looking for other ways to feather the family nest whilst thousands of people were up their waist in water. What is she thinking of?

What I'm looking forward to is the next uprising of the Red Shirts against the Thai government, only this time, it's going to be their own "elected" government....!! Just desserts or what...!!
