Carbon Fiber Or Fiberglass Roving?

Featured Replies

Anyone know where I can find carbon fiber roving or fiberglass roving in or around Chiang Mai? Thailand as a whole? I found one place in Bangkok called Future Fiber, but still looking for some other options. Local would be preferable.

Whats ''roving''. ?

Roving is a long narrow bundle of fibers. Basically if you had several thousand carbon fibers or fiberglass fibers and layed them flat next to one another you would have roving. Sort of looks like tape, but is really a bunch of individual fibers. Allows for more precise and custom placement than the easier to find woven fabrics.

This particular type is chop. Its is cut into 30-40mm long lengths and fluffs up resembling snow. What are you making if you dont mind myself asking? are you after Chop, TEX 600-1200-2400? Doffs? continuous?

Please send me an EM as I wanting to find supplier also.

Thanks

There some boatbuilders in Pattaya who might could supply it.

Probably continuous, but I am open to suggestions as it sounds like you know something about this stuff. I built a bamboo bicycle frame in the States this summer with carbon fiber joints, but fiberglass could be an acceptable and more economical alternative. Depending on the location and application, we used 12K, 24K, and 50K carbon roving on the first frame.

I've tried to find a supplier here in Chiang Mai also, but I could only find plain weave fiberglass fabric. It was impossible for me to find carbon tow, none of the suppliers here know what it is. I found one shop that stocked a roll of 3k carbon fabric, sub par quality and poorly stored, it was funny they kept calling it kevlar. I tried to point out the difference between carbon and kevlar but they didn't understand.

So I had to order these over from abroad, took around a week to arrive.

You could try and get a chese/doff of chop like above pic and make something simmilar to kitty hair if were on the same page regarding application. A doff like the one above weighs about 17kg and will give you quite alot of glass. Owens corning is one manufacturer I can recomend also CPC. the Mexican and American gear is good but the Chinese glass is average. Indian is a headache. Ive only ever used chop by the container load but you'll be able to buy a doff/cheese singularly and have it sent up. depends how much your after.

If you could find some good labour who can gel coat, glass, be safe with cat and rock up everyday then ute canopys would after a bit of hard work become a good product in CM to be producing. Personally I have had enough of Fibreglassing. Have fun.
