Hi I am interested in knowing if teaching in Thailand is still a viable prospect with a Tefl 108 hour training course 8 hours of which were observed practice in a classroom.

I have previous teaching experience within Thai schools (mixed ages) and also within the service industry (Hotels) which was approximately 6 years ago. This lasted for a period of two years though this was all arranged via a previous employer so I didn't have to actually go and find work.

Have things changed much ?

What can I excpect now ?

How easy is it to find work with my Tefl certificate?

I would value current Teachers experiences good or bad with the state of teaching in Thailand as a foreigner.

I'm looking to fall back on Teaching if my other plans don't work-out is this realistic?

You need a degree to get a WP. But teaching without one is just as easy as it has always been.

Is there any way around getting a work permit without a Degree? i have been offered work in a school here in Khonkaen at a private school, they seem very keen to have me teach for them, as i have been recommended to them by a Thai Teaching friend who knows many people in the teaching profession here in Khonkaen.

I do not have Degree or have not taken a TEFL course, which does not seem a problem to them, they just need 2 native English speaking Teachers asap.

I am booked in to do the TEFL course in January, and really had no plans of Teaching until after then but this job has come up and i am very tempted to take it.

It is at a very well respected School up here, that Thai's pay a lot of money for there children to attend, so i doubt it will be the 10,000bt sheme, but who know's maybe it is.

I will post how i get on when i go see them for a interview.

^ Sounds very nice, indeed! Hope it's all legit for you.

Can't help you with the WP info, but perhaps others know more about that sort of thing.

Good luck and all the best for the job!

and that is a serious shortcoming in our education system perpetrated by ignorance and foolishness such as this

Thailand wants its Foreign language teachers to have western degrees, but they want to pay you as if

you have a Thai degree.

I disagree.

Westerner's tend to have degrees from Western universities, unsurprisingly. However, Thai employers, the labour office and the ministry of education will accept a degree from a recognized Thai or SE Asian university as well.

Western teachers earn 2 to 3 times more than their Thai equivalent. For example, a Thai government school teacher starts on 8K THB per month.
