[Myanmar] Burma Seeks To Renegotiate Gas Deal With Thailand

Featured Replies

Burma wants to reduce the amount of natural gas that it exports to Thailand so it can better meet its own energy needs, according to a report by Reuters on Thursday. Citing an unnamed senior Energy Ministry official, the report said that Burma wants to renegotiate a deal it reached with Thailand under the former military regime so that it can keep one-fifth of the 1 billion cubic feet per day it currently exports to Thailand. Burma’s natural gas reserves, estimated at between 11 trillion and 23 trillion cubic feet, meet about 30 percent of Thailand’s consumption, mostly for power generation.
