October 12, 201213 yr Thousands of monks protested in Mandalay on Friday afternoon against the opening of an Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) office in Burma and the destruction of Buddhist monasteries in Cox’s Bazar in neighboring Bangladesh. Local residents told The Irrawaddy that monks from almost every monastery in the city took part in the protest. Demonstrations have been held throughout the week in various parts of Burma to oppose the opening of an OIC office in Sittwe, capital of Arakan State, where Muslims and Buddhists clashed earlier this year. October 14, 201213 yr I wonder what the monks' issue is with the Muslims. A disproportionate number of friendly people I've met in Thai and Myanmar have been Muslim. I suppose the Burmese harbor xenophobia just as do the Thais, Chinese, Japanese, and so forth.
