I am helping my wife apply for a UK visa. I have some quick Q's I'm hoping someone can help me with:

1. I live in Thailand, although we will be staying at my mums house during our trip. I have a note from mum, with a copy of her passport. Now when filling out the family visit application form online, I am not presented with an option to click she'll be staying with her "mother-in-law". Should we change visa type, or just add myself (I am sponsoring my wife on this trip)?

2. I'm only able to obtain copies of my apartment contract here in Thailand, rather than the originals. Will this cause a problem?

3. Do we need to translate our Thai marriage certificate into English?

4. My wife owns some land. Is it advisable to translate the land ownership document into English?

5. Should my wife include her birth certificate, and if so, should we get this translated?

Thanks very much in advance.

Welcome to a minefield.

You may need to supply a photo of your mums’ house.

Provide as much information as you can.

Apply WELL advance.

You will need all documents translated from Thai to English.

Give them as many reasons as to why you wife has should want to return to Thailand (property, relatives, children employment etc.)

If all else fails (application rejected) use an agent.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hi Bliib

I did this earlier this year and these are my answers to your questions from my experience (sorry, some aren't helpful):

1. I live in Thailand, although we will be staying at my mums house during our trip. I have a note from mum, with a copy of her passport. Now when filling out the family visit application form online, I am not presented with an option to click she'll be staying with her "mother-in-law". Should we change visa type, or just add myself (I am sponsoring my wife on this trip)?I made it clear in the sponsors letter I wrote where we would be staying. No need to change visa type for this.

2. I'm only able to obtain copies of my apartment contract here in Thailand, rather than the originals. Will this cause a problem? Sorry, I don't know

3. Do we need to translate our Thai marriage certificate into English?

Yes, as far as I know

4. My wife owns some land. Is it advisable to translate the land ownership document into English? My wife didn't translate her document.

5. Should my wife include her birth certificate, and if so, should we get this translated? My wife didn't include hers.

You do not (repeat) do not have to have the marriage certificate translated or the land documents, my wife has had two visas for the UK, the marriage certificate can be in Thai, and it is on the website that it can be, also the papers for our condos were in Thai, both times the visa was accepted.

last time my MIL applied her house documents were also in Thai, no translation required.

The guys 7by7 and some others will come on later and give you the same information.

The one time you might need your marriage certificate translating into English is when or if you decide to move back to the UK permanently, helps your wife with all the stuff she is required to do.

But for now no translations required.

1) The notes at the start of the form explain who is a family member for the purposes of a family visit visa; this includes spouse's parents. So it is a family visit.

Part 8 asks for details of the person(s) the applicant is visiting and the relationship; in your wife's case this will be her mother in law.

2) As Beano says, you don't really need your apartment contract as your passport and visa will show that you live in Thailand and this should be sufficient. However, it wont hurt to include it and if you cannot provide the originals say why.

3, 4 & 5) At present the embassy will accept official documents in Thai without a translation. There is no need for her birth certificate.
