Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been named one of this year’s recipients of the Sakai Peace Contribution Award, established by Sakai City in Japan’s Osaka Prefecture in 2008, according to a report by the Asahi Shimbun. An awards ceremony will be held on Oct. 25, but Suu Kyi, who has traveled to the US and EU this year to receive some of the numerous awards given to her over the past two decades, will not be present. The other winner of the prize is the Taiwan Red Cross Organization, which was Asia’s greatest single donor to Japan after the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
