webfact
Thai tourist police soon to speak fluent English BANGKOK, Oct 18 - Thailand's tourist police have been given six months to speak fluent English as the kingdom is widely opening its doors to foreign visitors as part of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. Pol Gen Vudh Liptapanlop, a senior National Police officer, said the AEC will increase the number of tourists to Thailand to at least 28 million each year and generate an annual revenue of Bt2 trillion for the country. He said the tourist police have played a significant role in relation to stability, economy, social and cultural affairs in the Southeast Asian region. Pol Gen Vudh opened a seminar Wednesday to prepare Thai officials, particularly tourist police, for many more tourist arrivals from elsewhere in Southeast Asia in the next few years. Members of the Tourism Business Association also joined the seminar. (MCOT online news) -- TNA 2012-10-18

Popular Post transam
I also had to check the calender to make sure it wasn't 1st April. Weeeeeeeeelllllll, this goes on the list, drug problem gone in a year, no more floods in BKK, corruption to be routed out, etc. Really is pathetic. Oh, forgot, the guy who built my kitchen extension roof who provided a lifetime guarantee, I can't find the sod. dcutman
My experience with the tourist police is, you can never get one to come help you. Does not matter Thai, little bit of english or fluent english, they dont come when you call.

nong38
And who will teach them English? The Thai English teachers who taught the English the language eons ago perhaps. Its only since I arrived in Thailand that I did not speak English after all, just a passing resembence to the correct version which is taught all over the kingdom..........."What is this?" "This Parrot." "Does Parrot box like Thai parrot?" " Parrot only speak English, like teacher." Popular Post DocN
Okay...even I might get accused of Thai- bashing...just to help all of us, to put the 6 months into perspective... From my six years in Thailand (and another 10 as a tourist), my experience is, that there are a number of time-meassuring-aids, that Thais use. Here we go: farang: "when will Mr. Suthiporn come to the office? thai: 5 minutes meaning: everything between "really! 5 minutes!" and "you might as well go home and come back tomorrow or completely forget about it!" farang: "so...when will you arrive here?" thai: 'half hour!" meaning: everything between now and ...somehow...later... farang:" when will the renovation be finished?" thai: ' 2 to 3 months!" meaning: I have no clue, but it might be in a time- span, we both will survive and you can check on it later! farang: "when will the construction be finished?" thai:"2 years!" meaning: I really have no clue! To illustrate my point: 2007 I passed a shop on Sukhumvit, that was obviously being renovated. in the window there was a sign, saying "open monday october!" Other numbers, Thais pull regularly out of the hat (or a part at the other end); 20% = the number of increase in the Tourism Business, no matter what natural or political disaster is just happening. 300 baht = everything that costs a Thai 100 baht ...and now "6 month" indicating the time- frame for "fighting the mafia", "getting rid of drugs in Thailand" or "learning to speak fluent English"!

StayHere
Great move. Appreciated. One should understand, they will try to speak. At least they are doing good move. How can we expect that, they will speak fluently. Language is for communication only. If we can successfully interact with each other, that's it. Purpose is solved. No need to be fluient.
