"Sweet" and "loving" are of course more often the result of external manner and behavior rather than direct perception of the girl's genuine internal mental/emotional state.

IMO in both cases the less developed the socio-economic background (i.e. more traditional rural and these days therefore poor and uneducated) the more likely are such simple and traditional ways.

As it's so difficult to to distinguish the two, IMO it's best to set things up so it doesn't matter.

Which is also that much harder in the Japanese context than with Thais.
