Bus Service From Chiang Mai To Nakhon Phanom

Featured Replies

Hi there,

As simple as the topic title suggests, due to a new offer of employment I will be transferring to the Isaan city of Nakhon Phanom. Does anyone know of

bus or train service to the city of Nakhon Phanom. A direct bus or Train service is preferred but not essential, as I do not mind stopping over at Khon Kaen

(or another city) along the way.

Appreciated is times, cost and indeed how long the journey takes.

Best wishes and thanks in advance.

The train does not go to NKP. Closest city for train is Udon Thani. Lots of buses from there.

There are buses CM to NKP. Most go overnight.

Most comfortable but longest is train to Ayuttaya then transfer to a train to Udon.

I do not think there is as of yet any direct service.

train is of no use at all-just look (I guess you are some khun ajarn?) at any decent map. Unless you belong to that trainloving fraternity-take it to BKK and then bus it from there.

Direct overnight and maybe even the odd daytime service run to Khon Khaen and Udorn-from Arcade 2-or maybe some from the new3 across the road. Simply change-after brekkie, into any direct onward bus that looks appealing to you. In Udorn you may have to deal with an other busstand-so I guess KhKn is best buy.

Cost: depends on the type of bus-normal per km set price that holds for all TH-grand total for both legs in a 1st cl around 7/800, certainly less as 1000

Their is an overnight VIP bus from CM to Khon Kaen,from there you will be able to change buses accordingly,it's a long journey and I don't like travelling at night,but for the price you get a decent sized reclining seat,TV,food and drinks.

fly to Udon from CM then bus to NP simple

You have 3 options;

1- You can fly to Udon Thani with Nokair after take a bus to NP.

2- You can fly to Bkk after fly to NP with Airasia. This is the cheapest option if you book in advance.

3- You can take the bus to Udon Thani. I guess it takes about 14 hours after another 4 hours to NP by bus. I do not recommend this, it is a long long way....

As you asked about bus or train NOT plane, this is your best bet. I'd also ask this query on the Isan thread as more local info.

There are actually a few services a day between P'lok and KK which is also a very scenic trip (I did it years ago) but really get that once a day O/N VIP service from CM and most of your journey is then done. I estimate 10 hrs min on the VIP but that is a guess, it could be 12ish? From KK onto Udon then there are regular services to SK & NP, most being 2nd class so try for a 1st class which is usally to/from BKK. Expect 3hrs? for this last leg.

(Note: in Udon there are 2 bus stations some distance apart so check which one you arrive at, in any case a songthaew trip will suffice)

You accept 3 options;

1- You can fly to Udon Thani with Nokair afterwards yield a bus to NP.

2- You can fly to Bkk afterwards fly to NP with Airasia. This is the cheapest advantage if you book in advance.

3- You can yield the bus to Udon Thani. I assumption it takes about 14 hours afterwards addition 4 hours to NP by bus. I do not acclaim this, it is a continued continued way...
