The UN special investigator on human rights in Burma says he is encouraged by improvements in the country but that serious challenges remain, including the continuing detention of political prisoners and ethnic violence in Arakan State. In a presentation and report to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, Tomas Ojea Quintana urged the government to release “all remaining prisoners of conscience without conditions or delay†and stressed that “human rights should lie at the heart of the process, driving it forward and maintaining the focus on improving the lives of the people of Myanmar.â€â€”AP
