Forty Burmese nationals, including five children, were rescued on Wednesday in the Thai-Malaysian border town of Bukit Kayu Hitam, according to a report by the New Straits Times. Initial checks showed that the Burmese had been granted refugee status by the United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees. They were found in an abandoned warehouse and were believed to be victims of a human trafficking syndicate. “We believe the warehouse was a transit point for the refugees,†said Shaari Yaakob, assistant superintendent of the Malaysian police’s secret societies, gambling and vice division.
