As we have rice fields we also have rice, sticky rice, the only one worth eating in my opinion. We have started taking some with us when we go off for a few days, as well as a rice cooker and decent coffee. Twice a day, as i only snack at midday, the heat seems to spoil my appetite.

I visited a market where they had 18 different kinds of rice on sale. Sticky rice was the most expensive.

Evolution:

Before i discovered sticky rice i ate only rice. Before i ate rice i only ate bread. Before i ate bread i drank milk as a baby.

Honestly these days 6 out of the 7 days/week i eat sticky rice.

Too sticky. It sticks to every nook & cranny of every tooth I have. Not worth the clean-up effort.

I like it with mango & coconut milk, as the milk provides lubrication and makes it a lot less sticky.

Interesting: So the stickiness of the sticky rice actually makes it less appealing to your likes.

Dental hygiene is not on the top of my priority list when a steamed barracuda is presented on my dining table. Accordingly i rinse my mouth with water or any other beverage ;-) that comes within hand reach after i feel unknown sticky parts lingering in my mouth. Mango & coconut milk is indeed a great way to eat together with sticky rice.

When cooking it the goal is to change the raw uncooked(but properly prepared) sticky rice from here to there.

Seeing that what is sold under the title 'bread' here is uneatable, (yes, just like in the UK and USA), then I stick to rice, best quality.

I will be constructing a bread oven and am beginning to see this as a priority as there are so many things that need bread (jam, cheese, salami..).

I overdosed on the stuff about 12 months back and my taste buds can't abide it anymore it's weird because I really used to love it. I was a once a day (or every 2 days at most) with a serve of Gai Yang for 18 months. Kind of sad but now I just have my Gai Yang with regular rice.

I probably eat sticky rice maybe once a month, maybe less. Not a big fan of it, usually only eat it if I'm really hungry and there aren't any options. Girlfriend doesn't eat it much either so I'm not forced to eat it through her. I eat normal rice almost every day though.

Seems like barbq meats gets eaten with sticky rice and the stir fried dishes and omelets with steamed rice. People are wising up to the fact that too much rice is unhealthy especially the sticky rice.

For me each day is different but at least one meal a day with rice and many days 2 meals. After a few months of that I really have a hankering for a cheeseburger though.

I think he asked if it was addictive wink.png if you eat to much of it then it is not very good at all, especially with diabetes, and to eat it with a BBQ meat is a great pleasure or even a good laab moo....if you live in the village then that is all you will eat in Issan,so in answer to the OP .....yes it is to the locals smile.png

There is a wealth of variety of Thai dishes out there, only a proportion of which are eaten with sticky rice. If you are eating it all the time, you should vary your diet a little more IMHO.

Sticky rice is still addictive in the sense that i would prefer it above normal rice

If you want diabetes, it's just the ticket.

How do i get diabetes from sticky rice?

Comparing the effect of sticky rice and white rice on glycemic control

in type 2 diabetic subjects.

Department of medicine, Faculty of medicine, Chiang Mai University

Research Institute for Health Sciences, Chiang Mai University

BACKGROUND: Many studies have documented the health benefits that can be

obtained selecting foods of low glycemic index. These benefits are of crucial importance

in the dietary treatment of diabetes mellitus. Sticky rice (Oryza glutinosa) is the main

carbohydrate source for Thais in the North and North-Eastern area. This kind of rice is

known to have higher glycemic index (GI) than the white rice (Oryza sativa) and may

have low satiety satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the possible difference in glycemic control

indicated by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in patients with type-2 diabetes who eat

sticky rice versus white rice.

DESIGN: One hundred and seven overweight to mildly obese type-2 diabetes patients,

age of 45-65 years, whose duration of diabetes less than three years and whose diabetes

was controlled with medical nutrition therapy and/or sulfonylurea only, were

interviewed for 24-hour food recall and seven day food frequencies. Demographic data

were collected and venous blood collected for HbA1c measurement. Patients who

consumed sticky mainly rice were defined by eating sticky rice at more than half of the

meals during one week, and the others were defined as eating mainly white rice.

Results: Sixty six percent of diabetic patients in this population consumed mainly sticky

rice. There was no significant difference between the patients who eat mainly sticky rice

and white rice according to age, sex, BMI, exercise frequencies, sulfonylurea doses.

Patients who consumed sticky rice had higher HbA1c (8.94% vs. 8.04%, p=0.025), daily

carbohydrate calories (p<0.001) and total daily caloric intake (P<0.001) than those who

consumed white rice mainly. Consumption of sticky rice was a predictor of poor diabetic

control defined by HbA1c>7% (OR=3.22, CI=1.01-10.25) independent to daily

carbohydrate calories and total daily caloric intake. In linear regression analysis,

difference in rice consumption was a significant predictor of HbA1c (p=0.047)

independent to age, sex, BMI, daily carbohydrate calories and total daily caloric intake.

CONCLUSIONS: Eating sticky rice frequently may worsen diabetic in the long term

due to higher glycemic index or more caloric intake due to less satisfaction. Since most

diabetic patients in this population consumed mainly sticky rice, there should be

consideration of more intensively nutritional recommendations to reduce consumption of

sticky rice for patients with poor diabetic control.

This study was supported by a grant from Thai government budget through Chiang Mai

University and was approved by The Human Experimentation committee.

I have got great expectations from people in this forum. Hence i state the stated.

Especially from people writing: "I enjoy just dipping it into a sauce as a snack". Hmmm that makes me hungry!
