BANGKOK: -- Almost nine in 10 people nationwide want Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to grab the reins of leadership and be there to make her own rebuttals during this month's censure debate, according to Abac Poll.

About one in two said they had more confidence in Yingluck's leadership and four in five approved of the Cabinet reshuffle, giving it six out of 10 points.

About seven in 10 did not expect the censure debate to trigger any changes within the government.

Four in five believe political rallies would promote the interests of politicians and businessmen rather than solve common people's grievances.

And three in five were afraid that the political conflict might spiral out of control.

The survey from Tuesday to Saturday in 17 provinces drew 2,189 responses, representing a national sample. The margin of error was 7 per cent.

A no-confidence motion is expected to be filed by the Democrat Party on Friday and the censure debate to be kicked off on November 25.

Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit said his ruling party would not assign coalition MPs to shield the prime minister.

The censure debate should be allowed to run its full course, Prompong said, confirming that the government had no worries about getting grilled by the opposition.

He said his concern was not the scrutiny but the campaign to whip up rancour against the government in southern provinces, including Chumphon, Krabi, Surat Thani, Phuket and Ranong.

Critics were citing issues like the falling prices for natural rubber, oil palm nuts and coconuts to mobilise the masses to take part in the anti-government protests.

A promise to pay Bt1,500 for transport costs had been made to anyone agreeing to join the rallies, he said.

He vowed to collect evidence to assist security authorities to unmask those behind the campaign.

One hopes that PM-Yingluck will now "grab the reins of leadership", of course this would involve attending those tedious-debates in Parliament, and not taking so many calls from Dubai.

It's not too late, she's had 15 months to get used to the job, she can still do it, if she wants to try ! coffee1.gif

The indigenous people of Hicky Dicky a small village in a place no one has heard of are holding a rally to protest about the encroachment of their lands on which lives the lesser spotted hopping blue beetle. The beetle when crushed yields a dye which is a vital in producing the colours used in this years Burberry collection. I hear they are looking for a guest speaker........

Never mind the politics, quite a nice little earner.

Assuming that it is true - quite an assumption given the credibility of Prompong, a professional liar.

Under the Westminster system, it is grounds for dismissal if you lie or mislead parliament (this may not apply here) which will put a whole new set of constraints on Yingluk. Sort of like being in court, where you can be charged with perjury, unless somebody changes the definition for you.

Depends on who's behalf / interests you doing the above, OM

If it,s in the interests of the exiled one or on behalf of the PT government you will either have been prepaid a mega fee ( bribe ) or depending on your performance, likely rewarded not only financially but earmarked for better things to come and a more deserving role of support within the party.

The 1.5k is well and truly petty cash when compared to what the UDD / reds are paid for their services to Thaksin.

It has been going long before he volunteered to do a runner and in addition to expenses / bribes they are provided with copious amounts of free alcholic refreshments and Somtam to keep them happy and keep them in the mood to effect maximum fear and distruction on those who would dare to oppose him / them.

AS for collecting evidence against them, there is no need as it is already well documented and Thaksin as everyone knows is to arrogant to feel the need for a mask so there would be no difficulty in the area either.

Unbelievable hypocrisy, but always to be expected from this band of unprincipled, marauding bandits and plunderers.

They don't need to stir up rancour in the South. It's existed down here since Thaksin officially ran the country.

I fancy nine out ten Thais are going to be disappointed.... but if by any chance she does get involved in anything resembling a live debate expect her to be wearing some very elaborate 'earrings'!

People want Yingluck to respond to critics in debate

She is the PM elected by the people. Why should she respond to critics? She is ELECTED and therefore she can do WHATEVER she wants. And if somebody pushes her too far in terms of accountability, she simply calls her brother who happens to be in charge of a red propaganda machine.

When my maid saw her on TV last year stumbling through her prepared "heartfelt" message to flood victims, she said why doesn't she just show us the scrip and let us read it for ourselves.

Sarcasm does not always come across well on a forum.

I would love to see Cinderella being grilled by Abhisit, Korn and Rangsima. Fat chance.

Chalerm will be barking and being his usual disruptive self, I am guessing.

We all know the PM is unlikely to handle or answer her accusers. She can barely string words together that have not been prepared by the spin doctors or puppet master. As to debate? I have yet to see her to a free speech without any paper. But I do concur, 9 out of 10 want to see her stand on her own two feet and from there she 'could' be favourably judged. But will blood remain the tie that will never let her have hear head? I think we all know the answer to that. And the scam continues.

Thais are so naive, They actually believe she can do the job ?. Jeeez , no wonder Educating the public is never a top priority

Am I a wee bit naive to expect our PM to give a quick overview of all her "Urgent Policies to be Implemented in the First Year" and the wonderful job done, followed with a list of "Less Urgent Policies, to be Implemented in the Second Year". Will there be time for it unsure.png

Actually, in Chumphon, Krabi and especially Surat, the constant ill-feeling towards Thaksin and the ever-growing one towards Pak Peua Thai has always been clearly evident, but in Phuket there is actually a fairly sizeable Red Shirt community - enough even to get 40 protesters to briefly show up at a Democrat pre-election rally in 2011.

It's certainly true that there are far more Yinglak roadside posters in Phuket than in Suratthani.

So Phuket might well end up being a province in which Prachatipat and Peua Thai both might feel they can strengthen, and end up being a political "battleground".

It would be good if the PM could do her job and show leadership in the censure debate but AI am sure 90% of those surveyed will be disappointed.

As for Prompong Nopparit claims, I fail to see any evidence of the truth of this blowhard's words, or how a campaign to whip up rancour against the government in southern provinces will affect that censure debate.

She would have to be willing to listen to what the Dems have to say. Not that she would follow there wants but she might gain a clearer picture of the situation.

The really big thing of course would be to dump her brother and his stooges.

She of course as all people in that position would do is make some mistakes but with out the anchor in Dubai hanging around her neck she would have a chance at correcting them.

Well I would have to agree with you. BUT they arrived at that figure through a Thai poll. Kinda detracts from the statement.

After al this is Thailand hub of polls where you tell them what you want and they go out and get you a poll to prove it.

Well I got into it by about four articles and came to the decision you are not only a tad to early but your are a decade short of any thing good coming out of it. I should have read on down to her masterful handling of the flood. That would have been a hoot.

Funny how she talks about all kinds of reconciliation yet every bill they come up with for it white washes Thaksin.

Dept. PM Pol. Captain Chalerm will surely be helped by the new Dept. Min. of Commerce, Pheu Thai party list MP and UDD leader Nattawut. Sorely missed this time will be former Pheu Thai party list MP but still UDD leader Jatuporn wink.png

I,ve always treated political related polls in particular with suspicion.

How first of all can say for eg 1,500 pollsters represent over 30 million potential voters who have an opinion.

The areas seem to me are always favourable towards the ruling party and as you rightly stated, i,m with you HD.

I go by the last sentence in your quote and the obvious bias towards whoever or whatever the polls are initiated for and on behalf of.

Polls are totally meaningless and most certainly are not representative of a Thai consensus /opinion and thus is totally irrelevant apart from propogandist purposes.

\Then there are the lucrative monetary incentives available to achieve and favour a desired result.

There are quite a few posts on these lines, though this one is particularly asinine and poorly thought through.Actually the message in understandable English from these people is always the same - I don't believe in this poll and the methodology is flawed because the results are ones with which I do not agree. The reality is of course that all polls should be treated with some scepticism (at least some US pollsters will soon definitely have some egg on face) and perhaps especially in Thailand, but to deny they have any significance at all is just absurd. Most sensible people pay no great significance to any one poll, but over time a useful indicator can be obtained.
