2Options none truly first class

Could get off a Den Chai at dawn on theNO 1 first class sleeper, tuktuk to Phrae 8 miles then VI buse

More comfortable a few $$ more I suggest if in no rush and I do ths journey ay times each year.

Train to C mai

Taxi or tuktuk to Arcade Bus Sta

Green Bus direct slow 7 hours via Phao no toiles but food stops

Or VIP green Bus 150 mins about 260 in a ral modern 3 across VIP bus one seat and a pair.

Can book online if you have a membership number or attheir agent next to Wat Bupiram Thanon Tha Pae in town I think they charged us 20 baht extra not o have to sclepp out to Arcade

Dont get out at new C Rai bus Station, continue into town old one.

From There local non bookable small local buses take 2.5 or 3 hours if via Thoeng to Sopsom terminus at C Khong 2km from ferry and 3 north of soon to open bridge.

The buses run from 5am to 5 pm red color c$2 single best seats at rear bigger and in th breeze,no comfort stops!

In a rush Air Asia,Orient Thai or Thai to C Rai then 1600 in a taxi approx 2 hours each leg

NB Orient Thai inc bags and snack c$40 but likeAA goes from D Muang

pm if I can be of help

Take as many forms of transport where ever possible that don't include buses or minivans. Mind you percentage wise you will survive...barely. Rent a car, parachute in, travel with drug runners, walk, anything but a bus/minivan.

Agree with above

For comfort 2nd class air sleeper inter bogie lower

First class air co is too cold to sleep

If returning you can rent jeeps from c$30 a day and saloons 1200 bahts up from C Rai airport I use ironically a Dublin agent and get a fre upgrade to aVigo around 5000 a week tho their insurance does nt inc off road

I hope you are awawre its cool in C kong now and by January my wife wears gloves at night!

Another thing to keep in mind is that all trains from BKK to CNX are late. Avg is 3 hrs, sometimes 5hrs. Be careful if you are pre-booking a bus/etc after the train.

Posted

1. there are-needless to even confirm, also DIRECT overnight VIP-999=super 1st cl. buses-and the whole lot of other classes, to ChKong from BKK/Mochit. ANY Thai town has a direct BKK bus.

2.you cannot even book those buses ex ChMai without being there. But there is a CHOICE of bus-incl, the odd 1st cl-but ex CMai its much quicker and more choice to go via Chiang RAI and change there. And it doers not really make sense to go via that route and not make those stops-then go direct.

3.rancid is just rancid in his fuming against dangers. trains also regularly have accidents-coming off the track-or otherwise tracks are flooded, submerged or whatever. Just to show you how they even let crashed waggons stand in BKk/HuaLampong station-as a reminder/ If you really like that 1st cl -you only know after the trip.

4.re car rental: its nearly impossible to leave that car in another place as rented. you are not in that USA here.

All good points

One way car rent easy just expensive

You pays yer money and takes your choice

Correct trains often late last 2 trips this Autumn the 8pm arrived at 1pm next day theNo 1 express olast week was only 25 mins late as i believe it gets priority on single track passing places.

The day time trip on VIP Green Bus is a delight on new dual carriage way excelent servce and views and the olde C Kong 'rattler@ no air is fine if leave before 11am when it can get too hot bar rear window seats.

YOU can book Green bus onlie by card but website is in Thai and so is order of destiantions

There are hourly buses to C Rai from BKK C Maiand C kong(daytime 5am to 5pm only)

Nothing would induce e to sit o afreezing Thai 14 hr bus, good chance of acidet theft and of course loud munching, screaming kids are a nice distractio from the KUNG <deleted> film slightly out of synch at 200decibels,great if you are deaf of course

Chok Dee.

Note long hail will drop you by Sopsom Bridge local around 100m nearer 7/11 ad day market

Most digs are on the river banks back in Hat Krai or over the ew 50m wide bridge into C khong

I took my visiting family on the over night " first class" sleeper from Bkk to CM. Never do that again, couldn't sleep from carbon monoxide and other exhaust fumes, the toilets were squatters that my aging mother found difficult, and which got very rank, very quickly , and there was a very long black hair in my dinner soup that arrived covered in cellophane. Whan I pointed it out to the steward, he giggled his apologies and did not offer to replace it ( the soup) .

Went to CM by train last week, two comparemts with connecting door in-between. Very comfortable. AC can be switched off or air vents delivering the cold air can be partially or completely closed, so no problems there. Western and Asian style toilet in bogie apart from a small shower stall, moderately hygienic, depends on users to maintain it clean. Food served hot price very reasonable (160 baht per set) but not gourmet fine dining. Trains going to CM are late by 2-5hrs always. Return train was on time. Children over 3yrs old or above 100cm tall need to buy a separate berth. This is all in first class.

As the above posters have said you can't go direct from BKK to Chiang Rai by train. If you want an option that's both safe and runs on time, I recommend the bus company Nakhonchai Air - they go overnight from Bangkok's north bus station to Chiang Mai's arcade station, where you can take the Green Bus to Chiang Khong. NCK Air runs between 500-800 baht (16-27 USD), and the Green Bus runs around 300 Baht. NCK Air has well-trained drivers that don't pull the reckless moves common on many of the overnight buses (the ones that sometimes end in fiery accidents), and, particularly on the 700-800 buses (I think they call these gold and VIP classes?) are quite comfortable, set up like business classes on airlines (minus the wine service). You have to book a bit in advance (a day should be fine) - this is how I travel between BKK and the north of Thailand after trying both the train and bus options.

"AC can be switched off or air vents delivering the cold air can be partially or completely closed" Really? Not my experience, and the staff - to whom I complained - confirmed that neither of the things that you claim could be done. It's the reason I too stopped taking the train.
