Mother killed, son wounded in Narathiwat shooting

NARATHIWAT, Nov 18--- A Narathiwat woman on Sunday was gunned down and her son injured in an attack in Ra-ngae district of this restive southern province.

Halimo Royi, 53, was shot in the torso several times by a gunman on a motorcycle and died at the scene while Abdulloh, her 25-year-old son, was hurt and taken to Ra-ngae hospital, according to Pol Capt Boonsak Numad of Ra-ngae police station.

The assault took place on a road in Ban Luk Khao village, Tanyong Limo sub-district in the morning when both victims were driving a motorcycle back home after tapping rubber trees at a plantation in Ban Lubo Diyae village.

The attackers on motorcycle followed the victims and opened fire at them before speeding away from the scene.

Police collected around 10 spent cartridges of an AK-47 assault rifle found at the spot as evidence for further investigation.

Police presumed that the shooting was related to the ongoing insurgency in the region.

Responding to a bombing at a railway track in Rueso district, Interior Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan said that he has urged Narathiwat Governor Apinan Suathanuwong and relevant agencies to assist injured victims and families of dead victims.

Permanent secretary for transport Wichean Potephosree and State Railway of Thailand Governor Prapat Chongsa-nguan travelled to Narathiwat in response to the railway bomb incident.

In a related development, one of 16 wounded was pronounced dead.

Mr Jarupong also said that the government has further tightened security in the violence-plagued southern border provinces.

Following the railway bombing, the interior minister pledged to step up more security measures, particularly on baggage checks. (MCOT online news)
