Good day, I couldn't find an appropriate forum so posted this here.

I am planning on buying an engagement rind for my girlfriend soon and whilst wondering round a Central mall in Bangkok the other day I cunningly managed to get her finger measured without her realising what I was up to.

At least I thought I was being cunning - I didn't really know much about ring sizes at the time and the lady showed me the ring measurer and it said "4.8". However since getting home and looking on Google it looks like 4.8 isn't a valid measurement in any country's ring size chart. The only thing I can think of is that it meant 4.8cm ie 48mm which would be a UK size I.

Does anyone else have any experience of Thais making up their own measurement system or does anyone else think a UK size I (US size 4 and a half) sounds right for an Asian girl? I've always thought her hands were of an average, possibly slightly above average size, they are not small and dainty.

If I don't have any luck here I'll go back to the stall by myself and hope they understand what on earth I'm on about.

Thanks

Can't answer your specific question, but if you're talking about a Thai female, just forget about a "jewelry store" and get your butt down to HUA SENG HENG goldshop in Chinatown-Yaowarat.

Pick out a nice big chunky ring, any size you like, using your measurement as a starting point if you like, it won't matter.

Make sure you keep it in their trademark packaging, just as exciting for a Thai as the robin's-egg blue box from Tiffany to a New York girl.

If the size isn't quite right, bring her back to the shop and they'll fix you up for a very small surcharge, or if you don't dicker with them at all in the first round you might even get them to throw in the re-sizing for free.

Don't worry about getting ripped off there, you'll get treated much more fairly than at any "jewelry" shop in a mall, and your teerak will know that you really love her much more following what I'm telling you as well.

Note that she'd rather have a full-on necklace since they weigh more than the ring, but of course she'll realize that we want to follow our own traditions too, long as you buy her heavier stuff down the road.

Best of luck!

PS Don't be hurt if she pawns it, par for the course, doesn't mean she doesn't love you 8-)
