Rice talks urged during Chinese PM’s visit

By Digital Media

BANGKOK, Nov 19 – China should be asked to take a softer stance in its rigid trade and investment measures regarding Thai investors, Chookiat Opaswong, president of the Thai Rice Exporters’ Association said today.

Making the remark in connection with a visit to Thailand by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao tomorrow and Wednesday, Mr Chookiat said Thai premier Yingluck Shinawatra should take the opportunity to negotiate with her Chinese counterpart to seek an softening of China’s trade barrier, relaxation of its stiff regulations and more convenience for Thai investors in China.

He expressed concern regarding Thailand’s rice exports to China which was reported at 216,000 tonnes in Jan-Oct 2011 but the export volume was reduced to 91,460 tonnes in the same period of this year, an alarming drop of 57.8 per cent.

The government should take the opportunity of the Chinese leader’s visit to negotiate rice exports on a government-to-government basis, he said, pointing out that China’s demand for rice remains high while Thai rice exports have been battered by competitors like Vietnam and Cambodia which sell their goods at much cheaper prices.

Mr Chookiat said he hoped the government will expand Thailand’s trade with China in various aspects thanks to the long-standing Thai-Chinese relationship.

Painting grim prospects for Thai rice exports next year, Mr Chookiat blamed it on the government’s pledging of rice at Bt15,000-20,000 per tonne which resulted in Thai rice at US$100/tonne higher than that of neighbouring countries.

To be competitive with other rice-exporting countries, Mr Chookiat proposed that the government may reduce the pledging price of white rice to Bt11,000-12,000 per tonne and to give farmers farming products such as fertiliser to a value of Bt3,000.

The proposed measure will make it possible for Thai rice to compete in the international market and next year’s export volume could possibly reach 8-8.5 million tonnes, he said. (MCOT online news)

If Yingluck had any sense she would go cap in hand to Wen and offer a deal he can't refuse, cop the loss and write the rice pledge off for the stupidity it represents. She has already wasted billions of baht, a few more to her discredit will mean nothing. If she doesn't then weevil city will take care of it... and cause an even greater monetary loss. Let's hope the censure motion works.

She probably won't have to go cap in hand.

They want trains and access, she has rice. Just reduce domestic production in China by a few percent and the surplus disappears.

His idea is to have China bail Thailand out of it's stupidity by screwing it's own people.

Here's an idea quit paying more than it's worth and crying because every one else in the world can get it for the price it is worth. Also reduce the kickbacks by 10% That should help lower the cost.

200k tons is zilch anyway.

Thank god for for that, Was thinking i was missing some kind of twisted logic like exchanging the rice for fertiliser so they could grow more rice.

They want to sell them, and run a big line to the port in Singapore and myanmar for shipping.

As part if the deal unfortunately for them, they have to builda few lines for thais to be able to get to bangkok without sitting on death trap buses.

I thought China wanted to run the trains through Laos to get to Singapore.

Have,nt they got that the wrong way round? I thought the price of thai rice had increased so much that there were no buyers,

downstairs there is a half sack of lum (rice husks) sat there since 4 months.. i noticed some days it begins to smell like its fermenting and its infact crawling with weevils, Are the government rice stockpiles in the same condition or do they treat it with chemicals?

Unprocessed, it keeps in a bit better condition than under your stairs. They hope, believe, plan, know.

Total exports are down 4 to 5 million. 100k tonne doesn't even factor in the problem.

North asians are not big consumers of fragrant rice.

Note to philw:

When you have 21m tons in stock any 200k tons you can sell lessens your storage problem somewhat. 'importing rice' seems hilarious, unless your dogs eat a lot that is wink.png

Somewhat, is something. It probably just makes a tiny space in some place that barely even registers on the storage plan.

But yes 200k tons is 200k ton. one baht a kilo margin would more than do me.

And the fools present here thought they would just scrap 20 million tonnes. Deals have been in place for a long time. The non believers can just keep talking about her gaffs and dress sense, shopping trips etc while those of us that know better can discuss the real issues without non sensical interruptions

When Thailand exported a record 10mn tons, what did that represent of the total global rice crop.

so whilst you call me a fool, go learn how the international rice business works.

Since no details are made public on G2G and other deals, I can only assume that you, oh wise one, suggesting that 'those of us who know better', are one of those. So, pray tell, enlighten us poor ignorant fools. Share your knowledge with us lesser beings wai.gif

The reality is, as clearly demonstrated by the reduced demand by China for Thai rice is that the rice subsidy scheme has artificially inflated the price of rice beyond its fair value. Therefore, Thailands customers are now buying from its compeditors, leaving Thailand with a big pile of rotting rice that in the end they will have to sell for pig slops.

Its time for the PTP withdraw their support for Thaksins mad rice machination, not only is it a threat to WTO regulations it will cost the Thai tax payers a large fortune, without any benefit.

The United States will challenge Thailand over rice subsidies at a World Trade Organisation (WTO) committee meeting next week, fearful that a government-sponsored crop could land up on the world market and depress prices, hurting US exporters.

But Thai authorities are not worried by the move, saying agricultural subsidies have not violated WTO regulations.
