thelongshoot Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 In September I took delivery of my new Isuzu V Cross and a few weeks ago I had a 'top up and down' Carryboy fitted for the open cab. At 35,000 Baht its pricey so I was expecting quality, but I think its pretty crap to be honest. It definatley improves the look of the car but the design is laughable. Top open the top, I assumed it would simply be a case of clicking the button to raise it and that is the all the effort needed. What you actualy have to do is open it, click a button to raise it in full and then pull down 4 support bars in each corner. For the back two bars you have to fiddle around the line the bars up, and then un-screw a bolt, then lock it into place into the dock and re-screw the bolt back on. For the front two bars you have to do the same which means climbing into the cab to do so. Its a good 5 or 10 minutes of messing around and each time I do it I am sweating and cursing. For 35 grand I was expecting something more convenient. Shouldnt these support bars automaticly lock into place? Why is it so damned fiddly? A question to anyone that has one of these things: have you thought about modifying the bars somehow so that they are easier to lock? And also what are the dangers of not using the bars at all? Could it genuinely dammage the Carryboy? Best TLS
Riley'sLife Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 I don't seem to be having the same experience as you. I find it easy to put up and down with the help of my wife it's especially quick. I don't find I have to climb into the pick-up deck to attach the bracing poles and it's all a 30 second job for 2 people. I've had mine on one of the vehicles for years. Before I bought it I thoroughly researched the competition. I have had to have it re-aligned once, and the rubber seal replaced in the leading edge and one spring replaced.... total cost less than 400 baht, The paint finish on mine was poorly done and I have been promising myself I'd get it re-sprayed but never got around to having the work done. I would not have a pick up without a Top Up as the benefits of keeping stuff dry, and security of goods being carried, especially if making numerous stops at suppliers where the vehicle is un-attended far outweigh any possible negative. If you fail to secure the stabilising poles with the lid fully up for travel, the top may require re-alignment, or if you travel at speed it could damage the joint between the metal and fibreglass shell. The only negative I find is that it restricts the height of what can be carried.
Backwoods Posted November 24, 2012 Posted November 24, 2012 All that is exactly why I went the extra for the "Super Up". All can be done from inside truck, or from outside with a key. When raised all arms lock whether all the way or partially, and has 4 motors operating instead of just 2. For 28,000THB I think it was a much better deal and I looked at all I could find.
BSJ Posted November 25, 2012 Posted November 25, 2012 The electric option would have been better, ay!
transam Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 I paid 20k with paint for an electric Aeroklas lid.
JAS21 Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 I paid 20k with paint for an electric Aeroklas lid. Lucky you ... I paid 23000Baht for the Electric Carryboy ... did get a free fold up bike though ... probably should have gone for another make as the electric bit is iffee sometimes ... I need to take it back for adjustment. Paint job is quite good though and it hasn't started peeling yet. Mine was the first one that they had fitted to the new model ... so it took a while longer than it should have done 3/4s of a day!

I also think that this brand seems to be better designed and better made than the others. Just wondering which part of the country you got yours in as within reasonable driving distance of Pattaya I only seem to have the choice of Rayong, Chonburi and the main office in Bangkok (near Don Meung which I dont fancy driving to)?

I got mine in Bangkok, and that price I said was with paint and handles. Was in Rangsit, next door to Macro. I love ours and was installed quickly, my only problem is that they had all other parts there for dressing up truck too, so I bought some shiney things too!

I also have a super up, paid 27.000 two years ago, and happy with it.Boy air & sound in North pattaya install Super up. To the OP, at 35.000 Bht it is not only a terrible design but you were also properly ripped off.

BlackPuddingBertha Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 In case anyone is interested, the electric Top-up is now 32K at Boy Air and Sound, and can be had for 1K less at the official dealership in Rayong. The manual version is 18.5K for standard colours and 19.5K for non-standard colours (white is fancy, it seems). I ordered the manual one as I'm rarely going to use it. It's basically in case I go on a long trip with luggage.

You would be surprised how often you gonne appreciate that you have the opportunity to close of your trunk.I had the manual top up installed at Boy air and they had to take it of again as it was really unstable.I have the Super up installed and it is solid as rock. Also keep in mind that together with the electric Super up a central lock for the trunk door is installed. With the top up they can still enter the trunk.

Unstable in what way? A friend of mine has a manual topup on a Dmax and has no trouble with it. I've had my pickup for 4 months and so far I've never actually put anything at all in the back, so I really dont expect to be using the cover often. It's really just for trips with a suitcase and I wont be doing those every day or even every month.
