Censure debate kicks off

BANGKOK: -- The censure debate against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and three Cabinet members started at 10:22 am Sunday.

The three ministers are Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, Defence Minister Sukampol Suwannathat and Deputy Interior Minister Chatt kuldilok.

Sukampol accused of violating Defence Ministry Administration Act

BANGKOK: -- Defence Minister ACM Sukampol Suwannathat was accused of breaching the Defence Ministry Administration Act during the censure debate Sunday.

Democrat MP Wiratana played an audio clip from a secret meeting to show that Sukampol had allegedly interfered in the appointment of the new permanent secretary.

The audio clip showed that then permanent secretary for Defence Gen Satien Permthong-in proposed Gen Chatree Thatti to be his successor, but Sukampol disagreed.

Sukampol proposed Thanongsak Apirakyothin as the new permanent secretary despite objections from the military leaders, the clip apparently showed. Sukampol was also heard telling the military leaders not to speak about Thanongsak's appointment outside the meeting room.

Wiratana said Sukampol allegedly violated the law because he had no authority to propose the nomination of a general on his own but would have to endorse nomination from the armed forces.

Here we go - he says, she says... muck raking and more political turmoil leading to what? Another election? Anyone got any real solutions or suggestions? coffee1.gif

How about the government deliver what they have promised, compromise their policies and make it better for both parties? Nah, that's not what going to happen, they got their employees full house and they will voted for them, and everyone gets back to their job, which is practically doing nothing.

Yes, Thai People need to come up with a real Strong and tough Leader, a dictator that can cut the crap out of the parlament house.

A leader than can enforce the law, tough to withstand corruption and government force of corruption.

Just like Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brazil, China, they have a strong leader.

Also a leader that can stop the US/Wallstreet prevalence in Thailand, the capitalism and monopoly that has been taking shape in thailand.

Nope not a one.

But I can tell you what the outcome will be.

No change. Facts and reality are not what this is all about. They use them but ignore them when it comes time for the answer.

Looks like the Democats are on a roll.

First the failure of the Pitak Siam group to cause civil disorder and anarchy and now the Democrats blowing some hot air in the house.

And of course the dithering, vacilating Abhisit can flutter about providing his indecisive leadership, a leadership that with each day sees the Democrats becoming more marginalized and detached from everyday Thais.

One of the reasons why the PTP lock on government is becoming stronger is that the Democrats keep following a failed strategy. If they ever hope to win an election, they need to clean house and get some people organizational skills, leadership abilities and a vision that motivates the people.

The censure debate kicked of 2 hours ago. What are you talking about man? Let them finish the thing first before concluding something.. pfff.. If you would have had some proper education you would understand that Thailand is a VERY corrupt country, but you don't seem to mind as long as your side wins. Mind you we are not supporting a football club here.

GK you are right - The Dems do need to clean house. AV was their big hope and he hasn't materialized into what they wanted, get rid and get someone untainted by the last messy three years of politics in a s leader, voters will respond to this. The Dems bang the same drum and sing the same song, a song which is no longer popular. They urgently need a new direction and a strategy to woo back marginal voters and make Thai politics a genuine two horse race again, otherwise they will remain a party of Bangkok and the South, which ain't gonna win any elections.

The only way this will change is for the people to realize that they need to choose their own political leaders and form aparty of people that have a platform of not making themselve rich but making real promises that are for the betterment of teh country and not themselves.

It is going to take a concerned movement that is willing to say here we are and we are only gong to stay elected for 2 years and then let the people decide.

Get rid of the shady coalitions

Will this happen in our lifetime

Doubt it BUT

I would suggest it is the only way

Thailand has a dictatorship. 1 party controls all. You don't see that. Secret billion dollar deals are very democratic....

Let's get back to the closest we can get to democracy in this country: A censure debate! Please stop trying to derail this thread.

(assuming you support democracy or even know how it works)

What exactly do you think another censure "debate" will achieve? The Democrats do not have the votes, let alone the support to achieve censure. The event is an attempt to obtain national attention, to show that the Democrats are still "relevant". If the Democrats want to rebuild support, they need to focus on legislation and offer amendments to Bills before the House. They need to offer alternatives. What the censure debate does is to provide an opportunity for the same old gang to offer the same old speeches. A productive opposition focuses on making things better, not on stunts like this. The outcome is already decided because the censure vote will be in favour of the party that has the most votes in the House and that's the government.

Thai PM faces no confidence motion

BANGKOK, Nov 25, 2012 (AFP) -

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sunday faced a no-confidence debate launched by her opponents in parliament, a day after political protests turned violent in Bangkok.

But the motions, which also target three other government ministers, appeared to have little chance of being passed by a legislature dominated by Yingluck's Puea Thai party and its coalition partners.

"The prime minister has failed to govern this country as promised.

She allows corruption," Democrat Party opposition MP Jurin Laksanavisit said at the start of the debate, which is scheduled to last for three days.

"She also allows outside people to influence her and control her administration," he added, in a thinly veiled reference to Yingluck's brother, ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Yingluck, who is accused by her rivals of being a puppet for her fugitive brother, told reporters she was "confident" her government could defend itself.

Her six-party ruling coalition, formed after Puea Thai's decisive election win in June 2011, controls about three-fifths of the seats in the lower house.

The debate, which is due to be followed by a no-confidence vote on Wednesday, kicked off a day after riot police clashed with anti-government protesters in Bangkok.

Police fired tear gas and made 138 arrests after a group of demonstrators tried to force their way through a fence on the edge of the main protest site with the help of a truck.

But the estimated attendance of about 20,000 fell far short of the half a million target set by organisers, the royalist group Pitak Siam (Protecting Siam), who called the rally off early on Saturday evening.

Police said Sunday they had freed 137 of the detained protesters without charge.

One man, who drove the truck, was charged with violating a special security law invoked by the government to cope with the protest.

Politically turbulent Thailand has been rocked by a series of sometimes violent rival street protests in recent years.

Two months of mass protests against the previous government in 2010 by "Red Shirt" Thaksin supporters sparked a deadly military crackdown that left about 90 people dead and nearly 1,900 wounded.

Thaksin was toppled by royalist generals in a coup in 2006 and lives overseas to avoid a jail sentence imposed in his absence for corruption charges that he contends are politically motivated.

Some people understand the democratic processes and others don't.

I have a 4" thick plank of mai makham that will form a breakfast bar at my house very soon. I'd wager that I could explain far easier to the aforementioned plank the reasons for the censure debate than I could to a similarly sized plank of mai daeng.

Corruption - rice scam

Nepotism - defence secretary

Transparency - opaque rice deals

The purpose of the debate is to bring this to the public's attention and to allow a vote. Those guilty of corruption and anti-democracy will obviously overrule any remaining morals that they have and support themselves in the debate. All visible to the proletariat.

And they are prattling on about a military appointment and falling to deliver promises in just over one year of being in power?

Is that it? Please come up with more than that.

Just to make it easier for our dear members and other viewers, follow this link to get details on the Government Policies as read out by PM Yingluck August 2011. Note that after the opening statement it seems to start with 'policies to be implemented the first year'. Personally I like the second objective from the opening statement:

"Second, to bring about a Thai society that is reconciled, based on the rule of law which meets the international standard, whereby all Thais are treated equally."

"Government Policy Statement

Opening Statement

1. Urgent Policies to be Implemented in the First Year

2. Policy on National Security

3. Economic Policy

4. Social and Quality of Life Policy

5. Policy on Land, Natural Resources and the Environment

6. Policy on Science, Technology, Research and Innovation

7. Foreign Affairs and International Economic Policy

8. Policy on Good Governance"

She allows her government to be controlled by others?????

The hypocracy is quite something. They were put into a coalition by army plan.

Are you talking about Newin and his group? The same bunch that joined Thaksin for 'rewards'?

indeed. Can't they come up with something we don't know, or are they going to state the bleeding obvious all day?

A couple of windbags who don't seem to have any idea about democracy. It is an obligation of the opposition to oppose & confidence debates are an opportunity to allow the opposition some voice in parliament (where they are often denied). The Dems have suggested different ways to run (e.g.) the rice scam but are put down because 'Thaksin knows best'.

Secondly, the debate has hardly started & we have the usual raving criticism. Reminds me of a debate when Thaksin was in power (locally) - he declared the debate won & all ministers perfect, before the debate has started.

As mentioned many times, there are some PTP supporters who seem to think that democracy pauses as soon as an election is over.

No i am not saying they shouldn't do it. But since they aren't having things like pms questions, i would hope they can come up with something really concrete to hang the government with.

I am watching it now, and chalerm is going on about his doctorate and how hard he worked to get it??

So don't "doo took", "look down" on me..

this is Thai politics at its worst right now.
