LOY KRATHONG DAY

Majority of Thais will wish for peace and unity on Loy Krathong

BANGKOK: -- Most Thais will make a wish on Loy Krathong Day for a return unity and love and an end of political conflict so that peace can be restored to the country.

An Abac Poll released Monday reported that 93.3 per cent of respondents said they wanted to see Thai people love one another and cease their rivalry while 87.3 per cent wished to see better economy, 85.2 per cent wanted to see politicians put an end to corruption and 66.4 per cent wished to see a reduction in the problems of drugs and crime.

On Loy Krathong Day, Thais traditionally make a wish when floating their krathong.

The survey was conducted on 1,258 respondents over the age of 18 in Bangkok between November 23 and 26.

Most of the respondents (95.9 per cent) knew that the Loy Krathong Day would fall on November 28 while the rest did not.

When asked who they wanted to go Loy Krathong with, 55.9 per cent said they preferred Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, followed by Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva (30.1 per cent), former PM Chuan Leekpai (9.8 per cent).

When asked which former prime minister they wanted to go with, 34.9 per cent identified Thaksin Shinawatra, 31.7 per cent said Abhisit, 11.4 per cent said Chuan Leekpai and 5.8 per cent said Prem Tinsulanond.

About 75 per cent would wish for getting rich, 70.2 per cent wanted to see their families and relatives happy, 68.1 per cent said they would wish for good health and 65.3 per cent said they wanted achievement at work.

When asked which potential candidate for Bangkok governor they wanted to celebrate the day with, 32.7 per cent of the respondents wanted to go with Pol Gen Pongsathat Pongcharoen, 31.5 per cent with Sukhumbhand Paribatra, 22.4 per cent with Sudarat Keyuraphan and 10.1 per cent with Pol Gen Seripisut Temeyavej.

"About 75 per cent would wish for getting rich"

I imagine the other 25% are already 'rich' then.

"68.1 per cent said they would wish for good health"

The first question in the poll was not even related to Loy Kratong.

Later, hidden in the article it is revealed that what 75% of people will actually wish for is to be rich.

The headline is a little misleading.

Just as an aside: I wanted to find out a bit more about those Bangkok Governor candidates and came across this article

http://www.thethailandlinks.com/2012/08/26/former-police-chief-seripisut-temiyavet-to-run-for-bkk-governor/

If you think the Nation translators are poor, just sample this:

"Gen Seripisut, on interest of a Phalang Krungthep organisation chairman, told a press discussion during a hotel in Bangkok a proclamation of his goal to run for Bangkok administrator as an eccentric candidate."

No surprise in polls, actually a 'no brainer'. Who would you rather spent Loy Kratong with, Ms. Yingluck, k. Abhisit or grandpa Chuan? I'm surprised though that only 55.9% voted for the ever smiling lady. Maybe there were too many women in the group of 1,258 respondents?

I heard a poll that said 51% of the people want the opposition to say the truth, so I guess the rest 49% want them to lie? Thai poll makers are too stupid, can't they make a poll that really sound? sad.png
