I can only speak to Japan and the Philippines, perhaps same same applies here? some kids are real porkers, I've been told by previous staff it is a sign of affluence for a parent to fatten up the child and people think and assume wealth.

I heard many times that fat pig looking kids look so cute.....As fatter as better.

As well I see family birthday parties at McDonalds, with young and old eat burger.....as European I can't understand that. Thailand has a good culture of food and than they eat burger????

Those Germans get around.

I had the pleasure to be drinking in Aberdeen with my fellow Caledonian co-posters, and a couple of other stout fellows, and I believe that there is no-one more diligent than the Scots in getting a round.

Actually I think the biggest seller in Thailand is the fish sandwich and the rice and chicken meal. I never see Thais eating burgers. A big mac is a much better choice than Pad Thai for calories. At any rate I think the person in the Photo has been around longer than McDonalds. I wonder what he ate?

OBTW are Germans Europeans? I think McDonalds is a lot thinner than a lot of German food eh?

I can tell you this is the way of thee world, only some places are slower than others. People are getting bigger in short our diets world wide are changing, more choice and new things. The effect this worldwide devastation will have on the young will soon be apparent as these young people grow up.

Obesity is an epidemic, not the parents fault but society role models, Mc Donald's sponsoring football and films for Disney makes it all acceptable, in the next ten years this type of sponsorship will stop, as did sponsorship of cigarettes in the Uk. This is a growing issue worldwide, only just rearing it head in Thaialnd. All about education. Kids want to follow trends parents want happy kids. For us understanding nutrition helps. I notice generally there do seam to be more overweight Thai kids than ever before.

parents are lazy, dont care enough, dont play with there children enough, "just get on the playstation son,get out of my hair" thats why kids are fat.

kids sit on these thing for 8 housr straight if you let them.

I know of at least one school where the lessons end at five p.m. Most of the students then go to tutoring for 1-3 hours.

Most likely to get the kids home at the same time as the parents do from work.

Wouldn't it be better to organise some kind of sport/games time rather than extra tutoring. They would get that thing called 'exercise' and 'god forbid' would have to talk to each other and not use tablets or I-phones or whatever.

Fatty roast duck skin is one of my favourites, or pork scratchings. Not for the kids, though - they're on cold salted porage and celery till they're old enough to smoke

One thing that's been missed - as thai children become more westernised, they want more western culture, food and looks ! Consider whitening cream, western inspired clothes, Apple gadgets, KFC, and even good old fashioned milk bars in some places. Consider the growth of the japanese bakery chain - kamakori ?. Also consider the gradual but real change in attitudes here, - increasing drug use, rapid increase in under age drinking, particularly on weekends, and at weddings, festivals etc. Also parents who are becoming less assertive about their kids behaviour, and scared even to challenge them. Does this sound a bit familiar ? Thai kids still want to be like their western peers, and like some of them are becoming fatter, lazier, and less concerned about the consequences of their actions.

There's been an explosion of snack foods available in the last 15 years. They are cheap. They are heavily advertised. Multinational corporatations explioting a new unregulated market. Lays = PepsiCo etc etc. I've a 5 year old granddaughter who has been mollified by treats all her life - her teeth are black with decay and broken, she throws a tantrum if she doesn't get her way. My wife and I had her in our care for 3 months, everyday she needed to take kanom to kindy because all the others did, I started to buy her those seaweed snacks, which she liked, and, we slowly weaned her off the potato chips and sweets, giving her friut instead. When her parents returned it was straight back to normal. now whenever I see her I feel guilty to have not done more.

Recently an US business delegation visited Myanmar to talk investment, have a look at the list of businesses that were part of the delegation!!! McDonalds was there for sure, when I heard that, switched off.

This Buddha is Chinese or? I don't know about the McDonalds but I always see them producing burgers.....Someone must eat them.

The burger might not be so bad, but the burger with the french fries and the sweet coke and the ice cream after is just too much.

And when you have limited time, you won't sit down and order a Pad Thai. But you may get a quick burger.

It might be less the burger itself as the (un)culture of fast food.

You must go to a quick McDonalds. I get pad Thai quicker than a big mac. I don't live in a tourist area so maybe my McDonalds is different than where you live. But I rarely see them sell burgers. Only the Thai rice menu stuff and fish sandwich. The one I go to has orange juice in ice on the counter so I see that purchased more than coke. If you look at the butterfat content of the soft serve ice cream you will find it much less than most ice creams available from the street venders.I think you are giving Mac's a bad rap. They offer many jobs and job training to people all over the world. Carl Lewis, Sharon Stone and Rachel McAdams all worked for them. They serve 68 million customers in 119 countries daily with 1 and a half million employees. Now what other company do you know that has a million and a half people working for them?

Calories in Fish and chips 950. Calories in Big Mac 700.

Lots of reasons from what I can see. Lots of the fat kids come from food stall owning parents and they one eat the food from the stall which is usually deep fried fat and sugar.

They also seem to come from business owning parents who work most of the waking hours everyday and keep the kids entertained with computer games and junk food.

Kids here in the main only seem to play outside which means exercise if they are poor.

And here's the big one it seems for smaller kids. The baby milk companies promote their milk to kids upto about 5 years old where as in the west kids are meant to stop drinking it at one year old. They 'supply' the doctors with weight charts and advertising no doubt along with financial incentives. The only kids that seem to be in the healthy zone of these charts are the little walking lumps of fat at the clinics. Any healthy looking kid is according to the doctors and the charts under weight and needs to eat more especially more milk.

Another reason all the junk food stalls outside schools.

Oh and of course some people believe you look rich if you are fat.

You sound like a right hoot, fancy a beer?

And you said 'corner store' this is Thailand NOT America, sunshine.

Who said, "corner store?"

The OP did, who else would i be referring to?

'I think that adults have the right to choose their own lifestyle, and can grow fat and lazy if that is their wish, but it's too bad they inflict it on their children. The corner stores like the 7-11 are full of products that are not good for us'

Nobody under the age of 75 says corner stores..

Thais are a lot more influenced by other Asians such as the Koreans and Japanese. Trying to blame the changes on the West is absurd. Thailand has always absorbed other cultures while retaining its own.

What a complete load of Bull both Korea and Japan have been swamped in western teen culture and that includes junk food.

Speak for yourself.. We all pick up expressions passed onto us from our parents. I was often asked to go to the "corner store" as a child, even though it wasn't on a corner, but close enough. Today, the Mom and Pop corner stores have been taken over by gas station stores, the 7-11 and other chain stores. In Canada, most of the "corner stores" were originally operated by Japanese or Chinese who were willing to work the long hours necessary. I'm almost 38 and I still use the expressions used by my parents. You sound like one of the dictionary cops who are always checking someone's spelling.

Every country has unhealthy food that tastes good - "junk food" - and the West has little do do with it. Did the West invent Pad Thai and deep fried grasshoppers? rolleyes.gif

Ulysses is correct; every country has food that really isn't good for you, but tastes good. Like I said before, as an adult we should be allowed to make our own choices and accept the consequences. It's not the same for children who are supposedly under the guidance of their parents. And kids being kids will always take the easy way out. If you want to have children then fine, but at least accept the responsibility of raising them properly and allowing them the greatest number of future choices. I think it is sad when I see the beggars who come into the city in the evening carrying their drugged babies to elicit sympathy from tourists. Those babies will turn into the little kids begging on their own. They don't really have any choices in life.

I agree with you to some extent as there is a lot of high sugar food available for eating in Thailand but I've come to the realisation that it's because the children have a long day.

I teach some kids who are in school from 7am and their last lesson ends at 6:45pm - no wonder they're fed so much sugary food as its the only thing keeping them going!

But yes, adults should not inflict such lifestyles on their children if they want them to grow up and be healthy.

Which school has classes that end 6.45 PM ?

All schools I know in Thailand finish their classes 3 Pm at the latest.

The school I work at closes at 4PM as do the other 3 adjacent schools.

I know students who go to extra classes at private schools from 5 - 7 for extra English & then go to extra science classes for another 2 hours after that.

I personally disagree with it, but it is quite a common occurence.

That is absolutely disgraceful IMO, those poor children. Why do people have kids if they don't want them at home? They probably get home and are not even allowed to watch any tv or have any fun.

Sickening to put young kids through that. Evil, nasty, people.
