Yingluck accused of abusing emergency budget

BANGKOK: -- Opposition Democrat MP Sathit Pitudeja accused Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Tuesday of abusing the emergency budget to benefit her associates.

The Cabinet had approved Bt43 million in January and Bt67 million in July to compensate and bail out redshirt protesters, he said during the last day of the censure debate.

He also played a video showing former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra calling for rapid relief for the red shirts, especially those still held in custody since the uprising against the government of Abhisit Vejjajiva in 2010.

Rather than allocate a budget through normal channels to the Justice Ministry's Justice Fund, the Cabinet used the money reserved for emergencies to bail them out, Sathit said.

The policy to compensate and help the red shirts, rather than facilitate reconciliation as intended, would further deepen the divide in society, he said.

Yingluck is simply doing what Thaksin asked, giving rapid relief to his red shirts.

That's political expediency Thai style.

The emergency fund should be for emergencies, not for bailing the buddies behind bars. When will the people of this nation lose the mai pben rai attitude when it comes to the abuse of thier tax revenue?

Is there actually a Thai word for "reconciliation"? I know it's not in their nature; so, I just wonder if it is in their actual language.

My Thai friend was offered a 70 million baht loan from the so called "emergency fund". With the 70 million he "had" to build a condo in Lad Prao (ground was already purchased by government official" and pay the official 3 million baht in kick back. The government official is a kid of around 27 years and drives a brand new ferrari.

Enough said.

I read it, I did not surprise me, and nothing will be done about it. Throw this bunch of racketeers out. The sooner the better, I mean what does it take? A command from the privy council?

Agreed but who/what do you replace them with? Me thinks it will be as the Thai's say, "Same same but different" ?

The problem is that her voters, the people of Isaan, are earning so little that the don't pay any tax, so why would they stand up against this.

There is a big difference between bail money and compensation. The bail money is still there albeit with a different state agency until the accused return to court.

That really is the point. He isn't taking a bean from the poor.

True but not true.

I some how think those beans would be enough to put electricity into 2,000 schools and better educate teachers.

True and not true. Where are all these schools with no electricity?

Maybe some kids get to go to better schools with all this money flooding the economy from this crazy system. Still doesn't change the fact he isn't actually stealing from the poor. This system is stealing from the exchequer.

And in true Thai fashion, it's only stealing if you prove it.

But that's the governments second strenght, their voters are not only too poor to pay taxes, they're also to stupid to realise what is really going on.

It's a win - win for Thaksin the government.

Yeah but, the majority are smart enough to realise the other side is bent too, and they won't get paid.

Are you talking about all those red shirts in 2010 that Thaksin cut there pay off while they were still camping out getting ready to build a big bonfire in down town Bangkok?

Not sure but I think it was two weeks wages they were cheated out of. The ones from Chiang Mai were so broke that the government had to give them a free ride home.

Wow! This is big news. Would anyone expect anything less? At least we know where a small percentage of the flood prevention money went.

Another Bt 16 bn of it is supposed to have gone to Hong Kong.

It may well that the reason nothing is being taken from the poor is because the funds which should be given to the poor are not getting to them, they may be only getting the crumbs that are left after all the snouts have finished gutting the trough.

That is a total distortion of the truth. Nearly every Thai pays sales tax in one manner or another, and once paid that revenue belongs to the Thai people in common, to be spent for improvements in the common good.

The sooner that the poorer people of Thailand realise that their "benefactor' is stealing from THEM as well as those who pay income tax, the sooner these corruption champions can be dispensed with.

Aye, seems that a big puyai has instructed that a silent lid be put on that case: 16 B Bt than noone talks about anymore.....

Concerning emergency budget: that is as it is supposed to be (Thai-style)..... for emergencies... read:" I need some cash very very fast and I can't use my own budget as we don't want that money to be traced....": Emergency Budget cheesy.gifcheesy.gif
