I'm looking to fly to Lua Prabang, Laos for a Thai visa. (I'm from the U.S.)

I'm wondering what kind of re-entry tourist visa I can get.

In Vientianne, I can get a two-month visa that's renewable twice for a total

of six months.

I'm looking at Lua Prabang because the flight's only an hour from Chiang Mai,

and the bus trip to Vientianne seems long, needless to say, and these

Thai people (although I do like them) are *&^-ing horrendous drivers.

There is no place to get a tourist visa there. Only Vientiane at embassy consular section and the consulate in Savannakhet.

You can fly to Udon from Chiang Mai on Nok Air and get a mini bus to the border.

In order to obtain a thai visa you need to go to either a Thai consulate or embassy, to my knowledge there is niether one there

No need to worry about bad Thai drivers from LP to Vientiane. It's all Lao bus drivers.

You can also fly from CM to Udon Thani cheaply, and it takes less than an hour to get to the bridge. The Thai drivers are not that bad You just need to get used to their style of driving

Listen well, Siddhartha, Thai people do have a strange style of driving.

Worry more about the Lao drivers over those mountain roads

from Luang Prabang to Vang Viene and then to Vientiane.

When I did it 10 years ago I got out of the bus and started walking.

It was just so dangerous. The driver took blind corners on the mountain roads

without looking or slowing down.

They have Tuk Tuks (Song Taew) which are very slow and safe.

I just waited for the next one to pick me up.

Oh yes and 2 weeks after that the bus was attacked by Hmong people

and all the passengers and tourists were killed.

It may be safer now. It was certainly interesting.

Are you sure about that? I know that it was possible.

It's only 1 hour from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani by plane, then go to the bus station which is right next to Central in the city centre and get the bus to Nong Khay,it's 40 baht and one hour,I just got back today!

Nong Khay is the border with Laos, get a bus to Vientiane from there (avoid tuk-tuks and minibus scammers) for another 40 baht and about half an hour!

Coming back you can actually get a bus from the bus station in Vientiane to Udon Thani for 22,000 Lao Kip,less than three US dollars.Or to Nong Khay for 15,000 Lao Kip,less than two US dollars!
