Pink Mist
I have visited a few shops in the area now and none of them stock test kits. How do they monitor ammonia levels in the tank, do they do continual partial water changes or watch the fish behaviour ? If anybody knows where to get a kit or even an indicator can you clue me in. cheers Edited December 8, 2012 by bronco

worgeordie
Hi Bronco, you need to change 20-25% of your aquarium water every week, and if you have high ammonia levels it will be because you are feeding the fish too much. You only need to feed them a couple of times per day,and just what they can eat within 5 mins. and make sure you are the only one feeding them, keep the food out of reach of any kids. If you follow those rules you will have no problem with Ammonia, growing live plants in the aquarium would be good to,but you need good lighting and that is a whole other story. This advise is if you have Freshwater not Marine Aquarium. regards Worgeordie PS also do not add too many fish.
Pink Mist
thanks for the replies. worgeordie, the tank is seasoned and everything is working well, it's a large tank and the population of cichlids is small. I only feed the fish once a day and only what they can consume in 3 mins and I do have good lighting and some plants. I was just wondering if the ammonia test kits or indicators are here, but after talking to proprietors they dont test just do water change, thats fine was looking for easy way out lol. Fish are lookin good, south african labs, electric yellows, blues and albinoes and some tiger barbs. Have some bristlenose and they are doing good job keeping tank clean. So am doing 25% change every week and hope for the best
