Folks,

I've searched but answers were quite old so I'm asking as guidelines evolve.

Does anyone know how far in advance an application can be made for a Thai person to apply to visit the UK?

We're looking to travel at the end of March & apply for a visa that covers a Thai mother travelling with child who's a UK citizen.

When we applied last year the visa started from the beginning of that month even though I had specified our dates.

This meant that the visa ran from before our application & so cut into the 6 months. We ended up with a 4 month trip.

Ideally we would prefer the US tourist visa system where you can visit for 6 months within a 12 month period with 3 months at any one time.

UK visas start from the date of issue; unless the applicant requests in their application that the start date be postponed.

This can be done for a maximum of 3 months.

As well as stating the date of travel on the form you should also say in the additional information box and the sponsors letter that you wish the visa to start from dd/mm/yyyy.

Then check this immediately the visa is recieved as this can be missed and mistakes cannot be rectified later.

Thank you for that.

I did request the following month from the application last year during the application but it was ignored & as you say mistakes are not rectified.

Assuming we want to travel in March then your suggesting that we could apply next month. My concern is that the same would happen as last time & the visa would run from 1st January which would mess up our plans to return at the end of July.

I'm as mercenary as the next fella & there are often airline sales in a brief window just after xmas so I'd like to gamble & book our flights then.

Last year I wanted to be sure that my wifes UK visa started 2 months later, since, as you say, in our previous application they ignored our travel dates. I enter the requested start date in the additional information in the on-line application so that it was recorded officially, put it in my letter of support and stapled a note to the front of the submitted hard copy...the visa came back with the correct start date.

Rawhod,

This is exactly the info that I'm after, thenk you. So you're saying that they actually gave a specific date rather than the start of that month?

We did ask specificly for the 1 July and that's the date the visa was valid from.
