O-A "retirement" Visa Renewal

Featured Replies

Yes you should get a 1 year stamp everytime you enter the country. If you do a border run on 23rd April 2013, you will be stamped back in until 22nd April 2014.

Your visa will then expire, but you have permission to stay for a further one year. Then you must have a re-entry permit, and will stamped in until 22nd April 2014 every time you leave the country in the meantime.

question as i hav enever seen this mentioned anywhere.

Is their a MINIMNUM amount needed to show as income outside Thailand to use the combination method for extenison?

Since i worked very little in the states i get the min SS pay out---- $293/month so

will that PLUS 700,000 in the bank placed in a week before quailfy for my extension??

Thanks

Since Phuket immigration now requires additional proof with the US embassy letter

whistling.gif The O A visa you received allows you to enter Thailand and stay here for that first year,

If you are were leaving Thailand within that year you should have purchased an exit re-entry visa from immigration for that exit re-entry.

A single exit re-entry permit costs 1000 Baht, the multi entry one you purchased later for 3800 baht allows unlimited exit re-entries during the time period of your O A visa,

Although you have an O A visa and are not required to do 90 day reporting you still need to purchase an exit re-entry permit when you leave the country and return.

Your O A visa is for people living and residing in Thailand for more than 90 days.

Each time you leave the country you need that exit re-entry permit to keep your O A visa alive.

Actually the immigration was being kind to you... although it's unlikely they would have ....they could have canceled your O A visa because you left the country without that exit re-entry permit.

Both a type O visa and a type O A visa are long term stay visas and are intended for people who are residing in Thailand for more than 90 days.

That's why an exit re-entry is needed if you exit and return.

Always make it a point to show your O or O A visa to the immigration on arrival or departure ... so they realize you have one.

Otherwise they may give you a simple 30 day entry on arrival.

It seems to be that is what happened....the airport immigration person didn't see your O A visa.

Did you write in the O A visa number on the arrival entry form?

And never exit that immigration arrival queue without first checking to be sure you got that right stamp in your passport for your visa.

If you point out their error right there on arrival they can correct it immediately without you needing to go to immigration later to have it corrected,

This applies to standard visa not the O-A visa.

It has been asked many times and conciseness is that there is no downward limit so that should work. But I would not sure myself unless had to do as you have extra expense for letter/travel to get. But if you are short of money and time then it will most likely work.

letter is $50, Bank statment is 200 baht

travel expenses 100 baht

Not short of money, just dont want let 800,000 sit for 3 months when i can use it to make $$$thumbsup.gif

The immigration officer that stamped you into the country made a mistake. You should of gotten a one year entry.

You should of shown immigration the stamping error while you were at immigration for your 90 day report. They have a desk just for stamp errors.

As said entry officer gave you a non immigrant O visa entry of 90 days rather than the O-A entry of one year and you need to visit the correction desk at Chiang Watanna and get it corrected. I would do the correction rather than a new exit/entry without as it might cause more issues if not corrected before a new entry to get a new year stay (before 24 April).

Thank you all three for helping me understand a little better, and to make me aware of the need to correct the stamp at a correction desk. This now raises another question for me. I needed to return to the states next year for 3 to 6 mos. and thought I should wait until I renewed the visa at immigration on or before 24 april 2013 to keep it good while I was gone. You now raise the idea that i have the option of a border run and re-entry stamp for another year, the getting a re-entry permit and make my trip to the US for a few months and I assume my permission to stay is still valid? Am I correct that I have two options, and does it matter, one way or the other. Or is it just easier to renew the visa, I want to keep it valid while I'm gone. Thanks again to all.

You need to get your current stay corrected. You can then make a new entry before expiration date of the actual visa to obtain a new one year permitted to stay and use a re-entry permit to keep it alive for your later return. Or you can just be content with your corrected date. You do not have an option to extend at immigration prior to trip as your current permitted to stay date after correction will be much later than April 24th and you can only extend during the last 30 days of current permitted to stay. The trip out/return before April 24th would be your new extension if you want to do it.

Hi again. OK, let me see, my original multi entry O-A "retirement" visa is dated 23 april 2012 - 24 april 2013. If I get my last entry date stamp corrected to 10 dec. 2012 - 11 dec. 2013 then that is the date I can stay until? Or do I have to do something before 24 april 2013? Since original visa is multi entry does that remain the case to come and go after april if the corrected stamp gives me permission to stay to dec. 2013? Am I getting this right. Thanks lopburi3 and all..

There no if for getting your stamp corrected at immigration. You could be charged for overstay if you tried to leave the country without getting it taken care of.

After that you will be able to stay until your permit to stay date and only need to make 90 day reports at immigration.

As long as you enter before April 24th you will get another 1 year entry.

If you leave after April 24th you will need to have a re-entry permit you can obtain from immigration (single 1000 baht multiple 3800) which will be valid until your permit to stay date.
