Chawang, Chewang,chaweng

Recommended Posts

As I understand it - there is no official, authorised translation from Thai to English.

I used to live near Klong Toey in Bangkok. I have seen lots of different spellings on 'official' government road signs.

Basically - Thais write it as they hear it!.

An 'official' map that I bought here 10 years ago shows it as Ban Chaweng wai.gif

You also have lamai or lamui , naton or Nathon and another one , is it koh samui or Ko samui

Sent from my iPhone using ThaiVisa app

can't say I've seen Lamui, (yet) but just about every place in Thailand has two spelling, keeps us Farangs on our toes!!!! blink.png

Only the Americans spell it Ko Samui, bloody pain doing a Google map link, and have to spell it out, to people..!! . crazy.gifbiggrin.png .... although there are tour buses from Phuket, I think, that has Kho Samui written on them ! ... rolleyes.gif

I love the sign near a skool, that says " SLOW DOW PLEASE" !!! biggrin.png

Well, if it comes down to Big C's spelling, that's an anomaly in itself ..... cheesy.gifcheesy.gifcheesy.gif

Mind you I've had a bit of a problem with Nathon in the past .... changing it to Nanthon!!! biggrin.png .... I have improved lately! (I think.... blink.pngwink.png )

From the Thai spelling it could be pronounced either cha weng or chey wong although cha weng is the correct pronunciation.

Lamui is just plain wrong.

This, never heard it called that before, ever.

It must have been a period of having a "senior moment" for me... or Big C just getting me confused!!!! laugh.pngblink.png

Well put it this way if some one said to me can you met me in chaweng or lamui i would not say. do you you mean lamai or lamui as i am confussed as to where to go

ior say " do u mean chaweng or chawang. i need to know i might get lost i might end up in chaweng istead of chawang" i would need to ask for directions.

Ménage à trois is also français and very pleasant rolleyes.gif but Chaweng was Chaweng even before the airport came into action.

Chaweng is part of Bophut. The main station in Chaweng is BOPHUT POLICE STATION.
