Sygic Thailand Map

Featured Replies

I was interested in putting an offline Thailand map on my Android phone. I did quite a bit of research and finally found a way to have a look at the Tom Tom map. If Sygic is actually using the Tom Tom map, I found it to be quite pathetic. You can have a look for yourself at the Thailand Tom Tom map from the link below. Road numbers and routing are quite strange. It certainly can't compare with the ESRI TSM map. Hopefully ESRI will get on the ball and come up with an Android version.

Not sure why you've used Tom Tom to slag off Sygic but you should find Sygic maps to be quite different quality (see attached) if you care to install it?

I have never tried Tom Tom so cannot comment on that product.

From Android Market;

Sygic is the offline voice guided GPS navigation app trusted by millions of customers around the globe. It's packed with TomTom maps and a robust set of navigation features. Both app and maps are updated for free. Maps are stored on the phone - no internet needed.

If Sygic is different, where can I see a sample? Have you had a look at the link?

ADDED - I'm not slagging off anything. Android Market says Sygic uses TomTom maps and if the link for TomTom routing is the same as Sygic uses, then I want nothing to do with Sygic. Have a look at the link.

Sorry I mistook the words "If Sygic is actually using the Tom Tom map, I found it to be quite pathetic" as slagging off but I stand corrected.

To answer your question: If Sygic is different, where can I see a sample?

One sample is in my post above of Bangkok zoomed in 3D. You can simply install the whole Sygic product from Android market (free trial) or side load the install apk file for free unlimited use. I have only tried maps for Thailand and India with it, so cannot comment on other regions. Garmin probably has a larger data base of countries covered, but they don't have an Android product.

I have just downloaded and wasted about 500 GB of download and after playing with Sygic, I have come to the conclusion that you have NEVER used a decent GPS Thailand map. I had tried this before and thought I'd give it another try. It still sucks!!!!!!!!!!!! It will be deleted from my phone.

I always used Garmin XT for Windows mobile PC before that used Esri Thailand maps and now I use Sygic on Android. The Sygic Thailand map is only about 120MB. I'd be curious as to what aspect of it sucks though I do admit posting somewhere else the search function on it sucks, though that can be worked around? Good luck finding anything better on Android.

After downloading and launching Sygic from the Android Market. The first download was about 240 GB. It got my location from my phone. Since the location came from my phone, I thought that it was downloading the Thailand map. After I re-launched Sygic, it told me to download Thailand map. That was about another 220 MB. After all that I found the search to be nearly useless. The routing gives a lot of options but I thought they all left something to be desired. You are right about Android options for a phone. There are NO good options.

I got this on a CD with my phone - I've been trying for 3 months to get it to work. I did like the trial.

I used to use Garmin now I use Sygic on three continents. I find it quite good. Certainly for the convenience of having it on my tablet and phone. I normally agree with everything Gary a says but on this occasion I have to beg to differ. I am also happy with the real time updates you get when you use it while online. Each to their own. Oh yeah it even has my soi out in the "boonies" on it. I give it a thumbs up.

My village sois are not on the map but than again, they are not on the Google map either. It appears that the ESRI TSM maps and the Garmin GPS have me spoiled and expecting something as good or better.

Hi I have Sygic on my iPhone 4s and my iPhone 5 they worked before , I have tried using it again and it is not working I am not getting a signal. Any suggestions ?

The search function is bad but the routing works well. I don't like the 3D so this is a sample

Once again decided to give Sygic another chance. What a piece of utter crap! Especially compared to ESRI map in Garmin that I normally use. A few major petrol stations around me are not even on the list of POIs. Small sois are missing... This is in Phuket

So what else do you suggest for your Android phone please?

I'm glad that you're happy with Sygic. I'm not a Garmin fanboy by any means, nor am I a Samsung fanboy. I happen to have four Garmin devices because they work well. I happen to have a Samsung phone because it is the best phone for me. I don't really need a GPS Thailand map on my phone because of the Garmin devices with the very good ESRI TSM map. I'll be quite happy to use my GPS phone if/when a decent map is available. By the way, I do think Garmin has gone backwards and their support stinks. I'm just glad that their devices are better than their maps and their support.

For Android - nothing :(

For iPad / iPhone - Garmin Thailand Street Map can be used with a bit of trickery.

I just want to use the best maps available, so whatever hardware is needed - I buy it. 4000 baht for a dedicated device is not much really.

Yeah go into the settings you have location by wifi networks selected - deselect it. Only have GPS Sat for location finding. It should work fine after that.

  • 4 months later...

I used Sygic for Southeast Asia Version 13.1.2 on a iPhone 4 and a iPad 1 to drive all over Thailand for 20 days. I had zero problems. No cellphone network access needed at anytime. Very large IPO database. Sorry can't speak to other platforms.

Me too with Android version

  • 2 months later...

I've used sygic in the UK and Thailand. Never had a problem. On a galaxy s3.

'And to give it the highest praise......even my wife can use it.xph34r.png.pagespeed.ic.qnFdFQwiuO.webp

Regards.

I have just tried the Sygic maps here and I can't get a gps signal in my truck 1/2 of the time.

Garmin no problem getting a signal.

Maybe it's the cheap IQ4 phones fault?

Does any GPS software work? Sounds like hardware rather than Sygic?

I have a problem in one of my cars I work in (a Pajero Sport fitted with some cheap video entertainment system and navigation display on dash). Whenever I try my Galaxy Note 2 I cannot get GPS fix on any software inc Sygic if using the Note 2 near front dash of car - or when I sit in front. I suspect some radio interference from the entertainment unit - much like on aircraft when pilot says mobile phones can interfere with navigation systems on flight?. In back of car I get GPS signal ok. As I sit in the front of car usually as a pax I have resorted to installing a bluetooth GPS antenna in back of car to sync with the Note 2. (The BT GPS also doesn't work in front of car - so the car is screwing up the GPS signal somehow).

Unfortunately Sygic cannot use BT GPS devices (at least ver 11.2 I have cannot), but other GPS navigation software can use BT GPS or the built in GPS.

Could be.

I will try switching off the radio next time in my Ranger and see what happens.

Some window film types also obstruct the gps signal.

The problem is that the body of the car acts as a Faraday cage, ie it blocks external electronic signals to some extent, in this case the signals from satellites. This effect may be more pronounced in some areas of the car than in others. As you have experienced, best satellite reception is achieved if the receiver's antenna is attached to a slanted window or placed in close proximity to it with as broad a view of the sky as possible.

It's the film on your windshield.

So the antenna in the phone is not so good as a dedicated gps unit.

My Garmin is getting the signal each time I use it but not Sigic (hence I don't use it anymore).

40% film on all windows expect front shied which is 30%

I thought it the film in car windows also but the gps works when positioned on middle back seat which is farthest from any window yet does not work on car dash. I suspect radio interference or the like. Only happens on this car as well.
