6 Months To Go For A Passport To Expire

Featured Replies

I just want to inquire this, my passport will expire on 29th of June 2013. Everytime I go to Cambodia to renew my visa, the person in-charge there always telling me that I need to go to Laos before 29th of December of this year, six months before my passport expired. I have been here in Thailand since June and since then, I'm just renewing my tourist visa in Cambodia to get the 15 days extension. My concern is this, I am working as a Teacher and the requirements for my non-B visa is still on process in the school. I know it is not possible to complete it in just a week. Supposed to be, I should have go to Laos this week but I am worried that, if I go to Laos and get the double-entry visa, how would it be if my school has already completed the requirements to get my non-B visa? Do my double-entry visa (which is valid in 4 months) will carry over on the non-B visa (which is only 3 months)? When getting a non-B visa, is there a requirement that the passport should be atleast 6 months valid before it expires, or its just depend on when or how many months are left on the tourist visa before it expires?

One more thing is, can I renew my passport in Philippine Embassy here in Thailand even I am still holding a tourist visa? Because I am planning to renew it on January 2013 here if possible.

I hope for your kind and prompt answer regarding this matter. Thank you and more power!

Thai embassies are demanding 6 month validity of your passport.

You can renew your passport in Philipine Embassy, takes about 2 month n costbthb2,100.-

Re your question about you double entry , you can change that in BKK to a non immigrant visa.

Thank you for your prompt answer, but is it true if I will not go to Laos before 29th of December, I will not be able to go there anymore unless I get a new passport?

I do not know above the Philipine passports, however with a UK passport you can renew up to 9 months before the passport expires, and the 9 months is added on the new passport, so you get 10years 9 months

Maybe worth asking the question

Yes, if you plan to apply for any kind of Thai Visa you need 6 month validity.

You will not be allowed entry into Laos with less than six month validity of your passport - as they have told you - this is the same rule that many countries have for entry.

That's what I always thought too. But last week and American friend proved it's possible, but probably not worth the headache and hassle. His US passport expires on 30 Jan 2013. he flew into Thailand earlier this month and was given a 30 day permission to stay. When he went to the Friendship Bridge at Vientiane last week, Thai Immigration would not stamp him out unless he got a letter from Lao Immigration saying they would let him in. Three hours later and several trips back and forth across the bridge, after swearing he would get a new passport in Vientiane, they stamped him out of Thailand. It may have helped that was able to prove he had a flight out of Bangkok on 26 Dec. And he did get a new (temporary) passport in Vientiane so I don't know what would have happened had he not kept his promise.

Actually I would say he proved it was not possible without special permissions (three hours to obtain from two countries) and a plausible reason for entry (new passport issue).

Agreed.

While technically you can do it, this certainly proves that for practicality purposes, it's not worth attempting unless one enjoys the stress and bureaucracy this takes. And You'll have to get the new passport soon enough. And my friend is not done. He still has to get his temporary US passport extended to a full one when he gets back to the US.
