NBTC panel finds no wrongdoing in Thaksin broadcast, urges caution on programming

BANGKOK: -- A National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) subcommittee on TV programming and content has found no wrongdoing in relation to the appearance of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a live broadcast of a Thai boxing match in Macau aired by Channel 11 early this month.

However, Lt-General Perapong Manakit, chairman of the subcommittee, which is overseen by the NBTC's broadcasting committee, said his panel had resolved that all public TV broadcasters should exercise more caution to ensure that TV programming does not lead to social and political confrontation among Thais.

"I hope that such an event will not reoccur at any public TV broadcaster in the Kingdom," Perapong said.

Perapong held a press conference after discussing the issue with Public Relations Department (PRD) deputy director-general Ampawan Charoenkul and three other executives of the department, which operates Channel 11 (commonly known as NBT).

The controversy erupted after fugitive ex-prime minister Thaksin appeared on the state-controlled channel to preside over the opening of a Thai boxing programme televised live from Macau on December 9.

"In fact, the appearance of the former premier on Channel 11 early this month is not considered to be TV content that conflicts with section 37 of the Telecommunications Business Act of 2001," Perapong said, citing his subcommittee's resolution.

The subcommittee also found no wrongdoing in the airtime-subleasing contract between the PRD and its contractor.

Perapong acknowledged, however, that Thaksin's appearance on Channel 11 had fuelled the conflict between his supporters and opponents.

"Given this sensitive point, TV broadcasters should pay more attention to whether programmes will create further conflicts between people with different political and social ideas," he said.

The resolution by the subcommittee will be submitted for approval and a decision on any further action to the NBTC's broadcasting committee in January.

Last week the NBTC's broadcasting committee postponed its decision on what action should be taken over the issue citing a lack of data and evidence.

If as Perapong has stated that the broadcast did not contravene any broadcasting regulations then why would he close the statement by saying

"I hope that such an event will not reoccur at any public TV broadcaster in the Kingdom"

A contradiction in terms yet again & obvious double standards.

NBTC yet another entity in the back pocket of the "puppet master"

One can assume that like most of this year, anything concerning Gov ministers their departments, Law court decisions , thing panels , hub hubs and all the rest of the political landscape, can be taken and believed like a grain of salt.coffee1.gif

In other words we will let the Big Boss off for this but woe betide anyone else who tries it in the future.

Same old, same old.

One must keep this in perspective. All of this noise is only representative of one side of the political divide, the minority side. But I suppose that is the job of an opposition, is to make noise about stuff. It doesn't serve them well in the long term however, when the electoral majority elected those for whom this is just so much opposition folderol, and of little import.(257)

Likewise, in a recent poll, reported on TV, a majority of Thais had the opinion that corruption is acceptable..... does that make corrupotion alright, in yout eyes? same-same, dear fellow.

Being OK with corruption is practically a prerequisite to be a PTP/Thaksin supporter.

Did you really expect a different outcome.

Didnt see the Thaksin broadcast myself but the lady boss said she watched most of it (went on for two and a half houre it seems).

She said it was a disgusting performance of whining, whinging and self pity, he said he had never done anything wrong and everything he had done was for Thailand and the Thai people.

Apparantly he also said that the judges who convicted him were the criminals not him.

She said the whole thing was a disgrace and put Thailand and the Thai people in a very bad light.

She said a lot more than that but you no doubt get the idea.

Not at all Perapon's first statement refers to Law while his second comment is his personal opinion. This shows integrity in the judgement.

How does he keep track of all these people and public organisations (in their entirety) that he has in his "back pocket"?

It's a gamble on which will run out first - Thaksins money, or the number of times this excuse will be used by some posters on here as an easy "explanation" for anything they do not agree with?

Are you seriously telling us that Thaksin spent two and a half hours in a

"disgusting performance of whining, whinging and self pity, he said he had never done anything wrong and everything he had done was for Thailand and the Thai people"

in an intro to a boxing match?

Or was that just the impression you wanted to leave? I think that you answered that yourself,

"She said a lot more than that but you no doubt get the idea."

Yes, yes we get the idea.

The subcommittee should have checked if any laws were broken, if any broadcasting regulations breached and if the broadcaster exercised good judgement. Apparently no laws were broken, no broadcasting regulations breached and no contractual irregularities. If true, then Perapong has added a sensible comment in reminding broadcasters that good judgement needs to be exercised in what is broadcast.

There have been similar instances in other countries when convicted criminals, fugitves and terrorsists have appeared on TV. Laws and regulations were not contravened, but good judgement of the companies called into question.

One must keep an eye on perspective, in this case it can be perceived that the majority of Thai's, if pushed would be or could be made dishonest, the education

system, possibly is a good starting point , the moral fibre of the nation is nearly lost, I don't say entirely lost, but the leaders of this nation have controlled and badgered the population over the past hundred years and living decades under the Junta regime, you learn very quickly

Mr. T was on the air for all of five minutes or so. What was criminal about the ordeal is that the first fight pitted a 34-year-old Thai who was shorter than the top ring rope against a foreigner a good half-meter taller. The tiny old Thai landed a few kicks to the foreigner's hip, otherwise made no contact. The foreigner knocked down the tiny old Thai at least a dozen times and then began ovbiously puching the air so as not to kill the little fellow. Then of course you know the outcome, up goes the hand of the tiny old Thai. Anybody know how much foreigners get paid to take dives so Thais look good?

I don't remember reading about Idi Amin, Papa Doc or any other ousted dictator/leader appearing on TV after they left their country.. I can't understand why the Thai's thinks it's ok for Mr. T (a fugitive) to appear on television every other week. It's like he just enjoy's giving the oppisition a nuggy to show who's still the boss. Maybe he really didn't do anything wrong, maybe it was the one armed man.. smile.png

Was there ever any doubt as to the out come of there ruling.

Not saying it was right or wrong but any recriminations from the clone government were expected before the broadcast.Every one knew the Government would say OK.

edit

I just realized it was a waste of money they could have used to buy more rice.

In this case the one armed bandit.

Official : Nobody did anything wrong at all, but must be extra-careful in-future, not to do it again ! cheesy.gif

Hasn't Sonthi not been sentenced to jail and he still has his own TV channel and talk show <deleted>!

(Please note: I have no idea if he still does any tv work or even owns any media thing anymore)

The point i am making is its just a big fuss over nothing. I am sure if the media had not drawn attention to it, about 0.00001% of all Thais and even less farang would have even known about it.

Sonthi is on bail. He is not a fugitive.

In that case it would be the senile's bast#### own TV channel, not a state one.
