Thailand tourism bounces back after the political turmoil of 2010: reports

BANGKOK -- Bouncing back from disruptions due to flooding last year and political upheavals in 2010, Thailand will welcome a record 21.8 million foreign visitors this year, reports said Tuesday.

Visitors were 13 percent up from 2011, and generating revenue estimated at 930 billion baht (US$30 billion) by year's end, The Nation newspaper quoted Tourism Department officials as saying.

The number is expected to grow by another 10 percent to 24 million in 2013, despite ongoing economic difficulties in Europe and the United States.

For the January-to-November period the number of foreign arrivals increased 13.57 percent from a year earlier to 19.76 million.

They must have a timetable to spew this crap every couple months. Does anyone believe it? This is the high season and it ain't so high. And equally repetitious are the 10% increase claims. If it was true every time, they would need to build five more airports!

I expect the 2013 10% growth estimate is a carefully calculated and extracted wild-ass guess.

How do you know the high season ain't so high?

Oh sure its a good one, attitude says, "we do well on our own", until..........

And yet again, few days ago growth was 14% and now it's 13%

Seeing as all is so great why release and post the same thing 3 times in 2 weeks?

And if numbers are so correct why does it change with every release?

It would not be the case of say something often enough and even yourself will start to believe it

Reports say an average of 50 Australians die each year in Phuket due to natural causes, traffic accidents and accidental drug overdoses. The number might be less if they stayed in hotels.

Hmmm 25,000 EVERY month , what, even in the low season ? Or is it 5,000 in the low months and 50,000 peak times ? Just curious !

It's based on the learning by repitition principle. If you keep repeating it then it will be obsorbed into ones brains and people will start to believe it as gospel.

As a Chiang Mai business owner I can tell you, things are as dead as ever & all my fellow business owners, both Thai and foreign, concur. Unless you've got a bar or a restaurant, things here are pretty bleak. I'm currently drawing up an exit strategy. The future ain't what it used to be.

I'm sorry to hear that. If I could get the money (salary) to live in Chiang Mai, then I would. I would come support your business.

Get ready world. Next month TAT will announce the projected 2013 tourist number will be 85 million. Everyone that believes this article stand on their head and whistle Dixie.

Now ya all go look at the FTSE 100 index for a year? Plus 7%

Now look at the Stock exchange of Thailand 100 index for a year Plus 36%

Now I don't know a lot about finance but I do think I'd rather have my money in the SET. eh? Must be some reason it is going up so much.

economy and tourism are not really related. while tourism does add to the total economy it is a tiny part of it.

you will find also that thai stock exchange is controlled so perhaps not the best indicator to use.

not saying thai economy not doing well, but perhaps not as well as some like to project .
