BANGKOK: -- On a scale of 1-10, the Gross Domestic Happiness Index has improved from 7.40 in October to 7.53 in November and 7.61 this month, showing Thais are growing more content, Abac Poll claims.

A half of respondents wished for peace and reconciliation and a quarter for wealth and well-being in the New Year.

The survey of 2,041 people in 17 provinces from December 20-29 found that happiness factors were Thais' unity to express loyalty to His Majesty the King at close to 10 and family relations, mental health and physical health at about 7 each.

The public called for politicians (35 per cent), the media (28 per cent) and investors and the private sector (13 per cent) to work on reconciling the country in 2013.

Thailand's opportunities spring from its status as a world tourist attraction (46 per cent), its investment and economic stability (27 per cent) and its technological growth (11 per cent).

What inspires people to do better in the coming year are loyalty to the nation, religion and King at 49 per cent followed by self-sacrifice and gratefulness to the motherland at 17 per cent.

Around the country, New Year revellers crowded attractions while security was beefed up in major cities for countdown parties.

Chiang Mai's Huai Nam Dang National Park was bustling with 1,200 campers a day. In Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district, 20,000 visitors were crossing the border to Myanmar, generating a 20-per-cent boost in revenue from the usual Bt500 million per day.

Chiang Rai will host the "Miracle Countdown @ Maesai Chiang Rai" event till January 1, for Thais, and people from Myanmar and Laos to get together. Buri Ram United Football Club president Newin Chidchob will host the event at their new i-mobile stadium on December 31.

In Bangkok, police were considering deploying thousands of officers to four famous celebration venues - CentralWorld, CDC Mall, Asiatique and Sanam Luang. Some 20,000 people were expected to attend Buddhist prayers led by PM Yingluck Shinawatra.

In the Northeast, Khon Kaen was due to station 800 security officials and volunteers equipped with 16 surveillance cameras, some bomb-squad robots and metal scanners around its event grounds on Sri Chan Road.

If 50% of the population are wishing for peace and reconciliation in 2013 plus 25% wishing for wealth & well being then my prediction is:

75% of the population is going to be very UN-happy in 2013

Poll is absolute rubbish and is not representative of what real Thais think.....

They're bamboozled, sedated, and manipulated.

Happiness is a state of mind. You can wish for wealth and well being, but still be happy of you don't achieve it. Happiness comes from the inside, and doesn't depend so much on external issues. I know some very happy poor people who are in bad healthy, yet I also know some rich people in good health who are very unhappy. Many TV posters have money and health and live in a great country, but they still seem to be very unhappy individuals.

Hoooooray, we are all sabai sabai.

Would being maisabaijai represent a national crisis?

On the basis that everyone is compelled to be sabai unless they lose a limb, this is hopefully the last stupid poll of 2012 from abac....

well as I see it the govt is using the age old mushroom syndrome on the majority of the Thai population...the more educated ones dont believe a word the govt says....

best govt money can buy....bit like the US

But polls keep Thai pollsters employed which makes the pollsters happy.

They're bamboozled, sedated, and manipulated.

And that's just the pollsters. :(

Now that what I call a Sentient Index.....If you poll 2.375 people and & put some quid in their hands & those 2 people are content...thats a 100%.

So whats wrong with that!coffee1.gif

The problem with "CONTENT" People is just that!coffee1.gif

Yingluck will lead 20,000 people in prayers? That should be interesting.

At least the Gross Domestic Happiness Index has more credibility than the Gini coefficient.

Blah blah blah

Does anybody have full details of the factors which make up the 'Gross Domestic Happiness' Index?

Being duped and manipulated by constant populist programs and false promises is also a state of mind.

Its called mind control,... Hitler and Stalin were masters at it!

...and where do you get your stats about TV posters being wealthy and unhappy?
