Malaysian Pied Fantail (Pied fantail) in Thailand

They look very alike, Willie have the grey stripes under the bill and the Thai have the stripes on top of the head. And the Thai fantail have a black band on the chest

And as you say, the Malaysian Pied Fantail is a little more brownish

Willie Wagtail, maybe the Australian Fantail looks a wee bit more sullen

But the Australian fantail takes the prize with the name

I really like the Noongar Australian Aboriginal name for the Willie Wagtail (a Flycatcher not really a wagtail) which is "Chitty Chitty" - exactly the sound they make.

I really like the Noongar Australian Aboriginal name for the Willie Wagtail (a Flycatcher not really a wagtail) which is "Chitty Chitty" - exactly the sound they make.

Mousehound, I like the Australian names as well, and it seems like they have a liking for Wi or We like willy willy. And the Peewee drove me crazy. Took me along time before I understood that it was the same bird they were talking about as they name it different from where you are from in Australia

And I can see that the Indian Rollers still looks good on Samui. Of course Samuijimmy, after a long polishing of your feathers you will attract someone

I don't know, but I think the different colours can have something to do with age/ time of the year as well

This is a Magpie Lark, they can also be called a Mudlark or Pee Wee in Australia.

Their markings can vary quite a bit and they are a much larger bird than the Willy Wagtail.

This is a Willy Wagtail. ( I understand that the names might be different from state to state)

Yes, first time I saw the Peewee I thought it was a starling or myna as they look a little like the oriental pied starling but different colour. I saw them again (of course, they are all over the place) and one lady out bird watching told me it was a Magpie-lark

I spotted them again and now one of the bird watching girls (from Melbourne) told me it was a Peewee

And as in your pictures, they look different, even in the same group. Some with vertical stripes and some with horizontal, with a black stripe over the eyes like a bank robber

So I thought it was different birds with different names until I learned about the different names depending from where you come from in Australia

do you think Samuijimmy gets embarrassed if we put some blue birds here. He loves the blue birds but they are not from Thailand, these are beautiful birds I took the last few days here in Australia

Well primarily this is a Thailand related forum, and we should try to keep it that way... But I am not going to get my knickers in a twist, if we get a few birds from Aussie land!

But please if doing so, say where the images were taken. Let's not go overboard!

It might be an idea that if birds are shown from other parts of the world then they should have a "hook" to a picture of a Thailand bird. Many are of course migratory or have clinal changes in plumage. Or are I do enjoy this forum in particular and anything that gets people into looking more closely at the world about them seems a good thing.

Actually the name of that bird is "pak berd" means bill open, or mouth open i believe... He he... That is what the Thai's call it.

Just some useless trivia..

A Little Egret in Sri Nakorn Kuen Kan park. Just cross the river on the 3 Baht ferry from Klong Toey

 

A Little Egret as we can see on the yellow feet. The Cattle Egret looks the same but have black legs and feet. I use another trick when I cannot see the feet to identify the bird. If the Egret is at the water it is a Little Egret. If I see the Egret on pastures it is a Cattle Egret

I had hoped on my recent trip to Udon Thani, that I would see many birds.... but saw very few... and not many close up!

Yes, I'm reviewing all the bird pictures as there isn't much else to do on this thread, until you posted your pictures a few moments ago. Nice!

 

Anyway, I was on page 1 and I found your picture

 

Can this be the Brahminy Kite. I have seen a few of them around. But this one is a tad bit too far away. The below pictures of the Brahminy Kite was taken at the Mahachai Mangroves some 90 minutes with car outside Bangkok.

 

 

And they have a special sound that is not to hard to copy, at least I thought I was under the impression that I sounded like a  Brahminy Kite

 

 

But, I'm not sure what the  Brahminy Kite thought. I was 4 meters from her/ him making my "EXCELLENT"  Brahminy Kite sound and I thought that we had a real conversation going for us. But when I look at the pictures it looks more like she/ he looks at me wondering who the <deleted> is.

 

I don't know, at least I have a hart time saying of we had some kind of communication or if she/ he was just calling for help

Don't be disappointed, even if you didn't see any birds you had the luxury to spend time in the nature. Give me a ring next time you're in Bangkok if you're up for some "early" mornings

Thanks  Aladdin .... could be a few years before headed to BKK again but one never knows!

 

I am not very good with bird names,  so not sure if eagle or hawk in that image with the lilies... that would have been Thali Noi Lake in northern  Songkhla (that's a great place for birds in the winter months.

 

This is one of my better / favorite bird shots.... may have posted b4, can't remember, it's actually taken before 2013  !
